I have been thinking about making my own knife for some time now, and have recently been looking at what tools I have to use. The one that caught my eye the most was a Tormek Super Grind 2000 set up with the original grindstone (250mm diameter and 220 grit). Would I be able to make a hollow ground knife with this tool, or is the wheel too small? If it helps, the steel I would be using would be most likely annealed 1084 or 1095 (Heat treat done by Peter's).

I have the Jet version of this grinder. In my opinion, you would already need it flat ground, and even then you're going to be at it for a long time, with results dependant on your skill. The stone is too fine for quick stock removal. If you decide to go this route, definitely invest in a second, more aggressive stone.

Thank you for the response. Do they sell after-market stones for these grinders? If not, I may just go with the file jig method until I can save up for a belt grinder.

Yes, just do some Googlefu and search for the same diameter, width, and arbor size in the grit you need. I can't recommend a particular grit or abrasive media, you'd want to ask someone with more experience than I.

The tormek stone is too fine for much stock removal, also the speed is pretty slow, I would not recommend it. If you go that route you should look for a 36 - 50 grit stone. I believe you can find some on ebay.
