possibly a journeyman submission knife

marbled ebony with a 416 SS guard and a bronze spacer
1084 steel

its kind of a Fisk handle with angles and points that i was told "don't do points it gives the judges something to sight down"

enjoying the freedom of doing knives that don't have a customer waiting on them. I get to do whatever i want :)

I don't know if you have any mastersmiths in your area, but even if you have to drive, get the knife in the hands of a master. Good luck, maybe I'll see you in Atlanta. Lord willing, I'll be testing there too.

no mastersmiths anywhere close, i will however be at the Janesville show and Kevin Cashen and Brian T will be there too i always get a critique from them. if you don't ask what you have done wrong you will never get any better. it also helps to grow thick skin :)

Looks good. I can't tell how I feel about the geometric handle, at least from a picture. I will say that yes it will make any unevenness stand out. I too will be starting on my JS knives soon, although for next years show (I work slow). I look forward to seeing how this knife finishes and the rest you come up with.
One thing you could do is post it in the critiques section on the ABS forum. Usually can get feedback from at least one or two MS, they can't give much advice on the fit and finish, but it is hepful from the design point of view.

Nice Work.
Have a great weekend

Looks good so far. Remember, the same points the judges can use, you can use too. Use that to your advantage and realize that curves are more subjective on symmetry. If it kind of "looks" off to a judge, it's off. Period. Angles and points are either on or off. So, it's a good thing...
...as long as you nail it.

Nice one Lon, good luck with your test. Bring that J.S. stamp back to Ohio, we need more.

There is a reason they say that Lon.
Also comfort comes into play in my opinion.
You can always mail them to an ageeable MS to critique.

well if that one wont pass muster i have more on the bench for the gang of 5 at the janesville show to look over
plus one that mudbone is making leather for

Hi Lon,

Good for you in stepping up to the plate and raising your bar.

Having photographed a BUNCH of passing JS test knives, I've looked at and talked with makers. The testing area is right next to my room. I can feel the anxiety.

The judges are fanatical about fit and finish at this level. The knives you are showing aren't even close to being finished yet, so no one here is fully prepared to offer guidance.

On the first image, I DO have a single thing I'd like to point out which would influence the panel: Your mark.

Looks like it's hand stamped and slightly deeper on one side. Believe me, this is the kind of stuff they will FAIL you for. That little 'insignificant' thing.

Show them to someone. Get on the stick.

I hope to see you smiling at 9am on Sat morning!

Lookin' good bro, good luck at Blade. Can't wait to see what Mudbone is going to dazzle up, tell him I said hi. Moon.

i can't tell from the photo but it looks like your stamp is uneven and nearly sanded off at the spine or way deeper at the bottom of the ricasso. If so finish it and sell it and make another for the judging. Remember the only opinions that matter are the five judges' in the room no one elses opinion means anything. but you can get a good idea from most master smiths.

Hope you pass Lon Then the Bowie I have of yours will be worth more lol. :) Good luck

yes the stamp is off, something is up with my press. nothing is final YET the handles and guards are all pined. none of the guards are solid to the blades im building them like take downs so i can change stuff if i need too

thanks for all the comments guys i had no idea this thread was still alive. ive forged ground and hardened a batch of brutes and finished a batch of new style deathwinds since i posted this... maybe ill get back to the beauty pageant knives this weekend
