OK, I hope you mechanical gurus can answer this one. It's probably a real simple answer, but I'm just dense sometimes.

I was wondering, since a quality grinder seems expensive, if a person with the knowledge could modify a regular wood lathe into a grinder?

It's aleady got a v/s motor and control. Just attach the contact wheel to the spindle and rig up some sort of frame/bracket system for the platen and idler arm.

Comments? Please don't hack me to death.

Thanks.
Dale

A Lathe makes a decent power source but the size of the headstock could be a problem unless you use very large diameter wheels. The headstock will get in the way with smaller wheels. The only other problem to be solved is the idler/tensioner... don't forget to allow a little lateral adjustment for belt tracking adjustment.

I will post a couple of photos of a simple two wheel unit here this week when the photos come back.

Here is a thought, What if you put your drive pulley on a shaft and mounted the shaft in the chuck. nothing too long, but would get out of the way and give more room. Then your frame, tentioner, and tracking all on a unit that could bolt to the frame of the lathe. $.02

Hey Dale...

I don't think you should be operating ANYTHING with a motor..
Its bad enough that they let you drive... :)

Havent made one for my wood lathe but I did do it once with my metal lathe. As already pointed out, make a frame with an idler and make a drive wheel to chuck or screw into the headstock. If you are just playing, turn a piece of wood round and leave it between the headstock and tailstock to act as a drive.

The real problem I see is that even on the slowest speed, most wood lathes are going to run a little fast for finish work.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm thinking I might be better off to start from scratch and not try to work around the limitations.

Hey Eric, you make great sheaths...... But if people actually met you in person they would soon realize you shouldn't be handling sharp pointy things!!!!:p :p :p :p :D
