I have plenty of flashlights, but the blackout got me thinking that reading and cooking would both be annoying without a good lantern. Does anyone have any suggestions for a cheap usable lantern? My guidelines for purchasing are:

1) must use batteries
2) must use "normal" batteries (not lithium or other hard-to-find type)
3) bulb type is irrelevant as long as it throws adequate light (fluorescent, krypton, led, etc.)
4) must be $15-30
5) the smaller, the better

Thanks,

Chris

Well, it's not battery-powered, but I'll suggest it anyway. My wife and I have had great luck with a simple 1 mantle Coleman lantern that screws onto those green Coleman propane cylinders. One cylinder has lasted for ten nights of camping so far, and we haven't had to replace the mantle in the past two years.

Coleman makes a battery-operated version of their popular lantern, but it's just the same size too.

Other than that, there are a few cheaper flashlights that "pop-up" to create a lantern effect. I believe these can be found at Wal-Mart.

Myself, I'd go with a Coleman Exponent Lantern (no battery). Cheap, extremely small, and is bright as heck for it's size. This one has replaced my large coleman for my camping trips.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, but I'm really looking for a battery lantern b/c it's going to be used indoors.

I got a cheapie GE for a Christmas gift. I figure "Eh, what the hell, I'll use it till it's dead." Well to my surprise we've gotten hours upon hours out of it!

I just might get another set of batteries!! D-cell with a florescent bulb.

Cheers-
