Post-GSM Changes in Cold Steel Quality or Process for Pre-Existing Models?

Hello Forum,

I've just got my first Cold Steel Recon 1 (in s35VN).

I was a little disappointed to see the new GSM Cold Steel logo (the one with the blade swoosh) on it, b/c (thanks to forums like this :) ) I worry that GSM may have started "cutting corners" in quality control. For example, from what I've read, pre-GSM CS products were known for having really good heat treatments. But theoretically, GSM could have made changes in its supply chain such that the current heat treat process is inferior.

Just wondering if anyone knows of changes GSM may have made in pre-GSM models (e.g., Recon 1, NOT "new in 2021" models) that are affecting GSM-made quality. For example, are post-GSM products still manufactured in the same factories, heat treated by the same contractor, etc.?

I know there are probably a lot of opinions on this topic, and a lot of anecdotal evidence (e.g., "I bought a new Recon 1 and it sucked!!"). Might be a stretch, but was hoping someone out there is in the know and can link to a reference.

Thanks all!

Serious defects and short cuts in HT and /or materials may take a long time to become evident .

Most stuff being sold may have already been on old contracts .

Hopefully , maybe at least Taiwan and other better quality vendors have their own decent minimal standards they will continue to follow .

Hopefully , quality will be maintained , at least on the better models ?

Hopefully 4034SS with CS special sauce is really a super tough steel after all , and I'll be glad to apologize .

Hopefully more reasonable prices for value will return . 🙏

It looks like newer Recon 1s for spear points are hollow grind now from the pictures I've seen of them. Mine is a saberish type grind and I LOVE it and use it daily!

That would be nice, I prefer the hollow ground recon 1's. However, I think what you may have seen are just stock pictures that have been used for years that incorrectly show a hollow grind and that weird sharpening choil area. If indeed they have switched back to the hollow grinds, I'd be happy to see them. My most carried recon 1 is a hollow ground XHP clip point with the olive drab handle.
