I believe that I stained one of them cherry years ago. It doesn't matter, just slather the handles up once a year with boiled Linseed oil for maintenance. Before you slide the head back on smear a healthy dose of liquid rubber on the handle and inside the head (I think that I used tub caulking on one of them, clear is less visible on the hawk). Slide up, seat it, snug in set screw, wipe off excess, then leave it to dry for a week or so. I have chopped wood with these two off and on for several years now, and the heads have stayed tighter than a nuns giz on a Saturday night. Modified Rifleman and a Frontier. The Rifleman is a better chopper. I have the fancy high end Swedish axes also, but I refuse to look down my nose at the Cold Steel hawks, as I see some do. These tools are perfectly useable for a weekend camp out.
