Hello all. I hope everyone is staying cooler than I am these days.
Because it's been too hot for forging, it's maintenance time for the shop tools. I've got a post vice that holds fine when I crank it down, but doesn't when it's only 'snug'. It seems as if there s a "high" spot on the left side that touches first. I've spent quite a bit of time with a 1st cut file, gently gently squeezing it in the vice trying to take this down and make the jaws parallel, but nothing has changed. Before continuing to remove material, I'm starting to wonder if I'm barking up the wrong tree here. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Is the screw straight?
How about the pin holding moving jaw to the leg? I bet that either of those could cause misalignment.

Check the pivot pin. Knock it out and see if it's straight and the ears off the main post are straight and the ear on the movable jaw isn't binding up.

Thanks everyone. I'm pretty sure that the problem is that one of the legs is twisted slightly. From my research, this is common on older post vices, especially the smaller ones, which this is. I'm going to let sleeping dogs lie, and just consider the extra effort needed to loosen it part of my daily workout.
