Hey guys,

Forgive my ignorance, but.....

I picked up a post vise yesterday at an estate sale and was wondering how you guys have yours mounted. I've googled some images, and was wondering if the long rod on the bottom of the vise (not sure the name) needs to have support under it as well.

I've never had one before and I don't forge too often anymore, but I still want to use it for all types of various things.

I have a picture of it on my instagram account, but I can't log onto it from work.... but I'll post a picture of it tomorrow. Feel free to post pictures of your set up!!!!

Thanks,
Adam

If you have a welder you can get real creative. The sky is pretty much the limit. Old car rims with a tube welded to the center and plate on top to welding a tab on the side of a metal table to support the leg. Without a welder you can go as simple as a large log like some folks use for their anvil.

The leg does need supported as that is what absorbs shock when you're hammering on hot metal

In this pic you can sort of see two of mine. They are both mounted on vertical steel posts welded to heavy base plates (1/2" and 3/8"). I like being able to drag them around as needed, and one of them I take to demo at fairs.

Another shot of the larger vise...

A closer shot of the 5" vise. I bent up and welded on a tongs rack around the mounting plate. It also works great to hang angle grinders from.

Here's a little 4" one mounted to my finishing bench. It's right at a leg of the bench, and the foot is set into a piece of heavy wall tube, which is welded to a flat plate that's lag bolted to the bench leg.

Thanks for the pictures Salem!

That gives me some pretty good ideas on mounting. I was thinking of something like a 6x6 upright in a 5 gal bucket then fill it with concrete, but my dad has a pile of scrap metal at his house I could go look through.

Does the base need to be heavy? Or will a wide base so it won't flip over be sufficient?

Heavy does help, but wide is better than just heavy. The idea with mine is that you stand on the base while using the vise. It being heavy helps when you can't be standing fully on the base, like for twisting dammy from the side.
