I've got a bunch of old sharpening systems and stuff I've used throughout my learning process of knife sharpening. But right now I've narrowed my equipment down to a 12" bastard file, some DMT Diafold diamond stones, and a double sided strop with black and green compounds.

For convex edges I have a stack of wet/dry sandpaper going up to 2000 grit. I use it with leather backing. I like doing everything freehand these days.

I started getting serious about learning to sharpen properly about 4 years ago and started with a Sharpmaker. After reading quite a bit here I started buying Dmt stones and propping them up on the SM rods. I bought an EdgePro a couple of months ago and have enjoyed using it.

Thanks. I have been practicing freehand and I can get a barely hair scraping edge with it. The goal is to eventually become proficient at it.

I restarted my sharpening with sandpapers at first.

Then I was back to whetstones.

Open a bucket, take a soaked stone and a cup, place them on the floor and start sharpening. 5-10 minutes.

Strop has also gone to be simple.

Other tools I have;
3 water whetstones (600#, 1000#, 3000#)
JRE EMS sharpening block
KSF double-sided leather strop
DMT Diafold FWFC

For now, I use some successive sandpaper grits from 240-3200 backed by either glass for a V grind or mouse pad for convex. I follow by stropping on some cardboard loaded with polishing compound from the garage. It works well enough, but I will be getting an Edge Pro soon.

Along with these I use a Kalamazoo 1'x42" belt grinder, paper wheel set-up, DMT 3"x8" continuous stones.

Forgot to mention The Work Sharp Electric Sharpening Tool and Strops with .50 and .25 DIamond Spray
Wife says I need Help and she is right.

A fixture I made to hold stones at different angles for sharpening. Can also use the stone holder flat to freehand.

I use something very similar in concept to the above vertical holder. It's a 4x4 board cut at the desired angle and screwed to a 1x8 board for a base. Then I just lean my stone against it. I currently use them in conjuction with a Sharpmaker. The 220/1000 grit water stone puts on the bevel and raises a burr, then the Sharpmaker adds a micro bevel and polishes the edge. I have blocks in 12 degrees and 17 degrees, then follow them with the 15 and 20 degree sharpmaker slots. I also have a Harbor Freight 1x30 sander with 80, 120, and 180 grit belts and a leather belt w/ white compound.

Back when I was a kid, every household had one of those! I remember my father telling my mother not to use the electric sharpener on the back of the can opener because it would ruin the blade, and instead to use these roller thingies!
