Would it be okay to post about a good deal on batteries, and also the site where I learned of the deal? Where would this be appropriate, if at all? Thanks!

It will depend on which forum you want to post in and will also depend on if you have any relationship to the seller.

You're best course would be to contact a moderator of the target forum by e-mail or PM absolutely BEFORE posting.

If we allowed that kind of post we'd be overrun with them. Imagine 40,000 people posting every time they see a good deal on something....

No doubt we all use batteries for one thing and another, but when we need some we can find a good deal; all it takes is a quick web search.

That means "No". ;)

These threads exist, especially regarding knives, and I personally like them. I've been turned onto more good knife deals than I can count via Bladeforums. It's not always a simple matter of an internet search when you're talking about a sale at a chain or department store.

But such posts are often frowned upon.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why some fly and some are locked down.

Well, it would have a better chance if it's about a knife rather than about batteries or laundry detergent, and a much better chance if it's a knife discussion that happens to mention where you can see the knife than if it's nothing but a shill. There's been some talk about the new knives at Walmart, for instance, and those threads have been discussing the knives, what steel they're made of, what country they're made in, not just where and what price. Those threads were definitely not started by the president of Walmart shilling his own stores, too.

I wouldn't expect perfect consistency here or any place that has as many different forums and moderators as we do, but we do make some effort to be somewhat rational.

Makes sense Cougar. I have seen mention of battery deals at Botach (we're talking years ago) in Gadgets & Gear, but I don't think I've ever seen one that was started as such. More recently, there's a lot of Buck 110 deals mentioned, and because of these threads, I picked up some nice Xmas presents this year for a song. There's also a really long thread about the Walmart Natives. Back when there used to be more Spyderco clearances at SMKW, folks would give a heads up when one rolled around. A post I read about Spyderco Standard and Rookie deals at SMKW is what got me hooked on Bladeforums in the first place. I know it's Spark's board to run as he sees fit, and I understand he runs a knife store as well. I guess I was just wondering out loud about how/why some of the "deal" threads survive when others meet a quick death. Thanks for your answer.
