As I understand, posting "I'll take it" in a sales post is a definite "I am going to buy it and am 100% committed". That was good for me to learn because I had no idea. What I am confused about is I often see posts that go...

OP:Knife for sale, $100
P1: I'll take it
OP: Knife still available
P2: I would like the knife

or...

OP: Knife for sale, $200
P1: I'll take it
P2: Seconds

If the phrase is so definite, why bother calling for seconds, or how come many times the knife is "still available". How do the transactions fall through if backing out of an "I'll take it" is so frowned upon? Are there some sort of amicable ways of backing out that I am not aware of?

Just trying to learn about the forum before I start buying/selling, thanks.

There are a few ways of losing out on an "I'll take it." Sometimes the bidder contacts the seller and tells him "I'm not in the US," and the seller really meant it when he specified US only.

Sometimes the buyer doesn't have PayPal and the seller only wants to use that method of payment.

Sometimes the buyer says he will take it -- if the seller can lower the price.

So the seller comes back and puts the knife up again (without beating on the first bidder by saying why) and that's also why people post "seconds" in case the first deal falls through.

That is the thing, the phrase isn't as definite as it should be. Esav pointed out the most common scenarios. As far as backing out of a sale, it happens once in a while. It can be done amicably, but that entails some degree of understanding on the sellers part and common sense to begin with on the buyers part. That entire aspect of the rules is more of a guide than a hard and fast way to do things. If someone repeatedly flakes on deals, then we will take action. Some folks had a history of buying an item, only to return it because they refused to ask the necessary questions that would satisfy their concerns before conducting the transaction. Subsequently, their accounts were closed due to the overwhelming drama associated with their activity.
