I have been wondering for some time now, how many people look at a post topic and the following thread as compared to how many actually post something...is there a counter somewhere, is there any way to guesstimate this??? just curious

That's a good question, but kind of trivial, don't you think? the people that go to a thread and don't post probably have no feelings about it, so they wouldn't add to anything related to the thread. right?

only the people that do post and have something good to say should be counted because the people that go in and decide they don't want to post either don't know or they are lazy, or they are in a hurry.

adding to a thread is much more important than just viewing it. I have thought it would be nice to know how many people have looked at it, but would that really change anything?

this is my personal opinion that people that don't add to conversations, don't deserve to be recognized. just my opinion though. don't yell at me now.

There are far more lurkers on the net than active posters. If you think you're only talking to a few people, you're wrong.... A while ago, when this forum had even fewer registered members than now, a link was posted to a website with some knife-related humor on it ... as I recall the owner of that website said he got over 50,000 hits the first day. Every now and then we get a clue like that to remind us our words are being read by a lot of people.... A common rule of thumb is ten to twenty lurkers to every active poster on usenet and mailing lists, but it varies between different groups and lists. I wouldn't be surprised if web-based forums have even more lurkers, because we're easier to access, and I suspect people who don't know enough about the net to access newsgroups and mailing lists yet are more likely to be lurkers than those who do.

This post is not merely the author's opinions; it is the trrrrrruth. This post is intended to cause dissension and unrest and upset people, and ultimately drive them mad. Please do not misinterpret my intentions in posting this.

I do a fair amount of posting, but only to things I have an opinion about or where I think I can add something of value. I'm also a big lurker. I love to learn as much as possible about things I'm interested in. There is no better place anywhere than BF to learn about knives. Not only do you learn about knives but also about the people that love them. I'm a maker, so I want to learn what people want. This is a great place for all, including lurkers.

Did you ever think that their reply or opinion might have already been said???

I often go into a thread that has the same thing posted a couple times. I don't think some folks read the other Forumite's replies before they post their own. The original post in a thread is very important as it sets the topic being discussed, but the replies are also very important!! Take care! Michael

I don't agree that only those who actually post should be seen as important. We learn from every post we read [except for those "I'm Senior!!!" wastes of space

] and that will often help us to contribute something of value in the future.

what cougar says reflects my sentiments exactly...i think there are a lot of people that read these things but have no desire to post or even to have anyone know that they are there....but they are reading all this stuff and cruising around the site all the time....we need to be careful and courteous at all times....

I learn lots more by reading than I contribute by posting. Oftentimes, like L6 noted, others have already said what I would say -- and usually better than I could -- by the time I check out a thread. So no point in cluttering the thread (like this post now

I've been on the Bladeforums and been a member since April or so, and I just now reached 100 posts. I generally spend 1-2 hours PER DAY here, and if I don't feel I have something important to contribute, I'll just read on.

I have learned so much just by reading, that I have completely changed the way I buy and take care of my knives.

No other single thing has influenced my thoughts on knives and other sharp things more than Bladeforums.

LURKERS, Thanks for checking us out, and hopefully you'll find the courage to contribute when you can.

I read far more than I post, but i post a lot. I only post when I have something to say otherwise i read and learn.

A guess would be 25%, because if I can't add something, or at least crack a joke (or laugh at a previous one) then I just move on. Many subjects are well beyond my knowledge and experience, so I keep my mouth shut.
