Over on the Neo Tribal Forum and related areas there's a tradition called Iron In The Hat.

This is a community effort where a theme is established by consensus and participant's names are thrown into a "hat". Each maker creates a knife along the lines of the current theme for the fortunate human whose name he has drawn.

I'm about to become the beneficiary of an offshoot of a recent IITH, so even though I haven't participated directly - I'm not yet a smith - I'm happy. This suggests to me IITH is larger than the sum of its parts - that's it's potentially a great tradition.

So what the heck?! Anyone interested here? What would this forum call such a thing? Think it would work here?

Dave

P.S. "Pot Luck" is a Missouri Synod Lutheran Church thing where everyone brings their favoriate dish and the whole group gets a lot of food in them. It's a good thing!

Hey Dave, it's a great way to get people, especially lurkers, into making knives. I've participated in most of the earlier drawings and I ran the friction folder Iron in the Hat we had at the NT forum (The Outpost). I cherish the knives and objects I've recieved from people around the world, each one tells you a lttle something about the person who made it.

I now have a neck knife made by Achim Wirtz in Germany, a blacksmiths butter-knife made by Roger Gregory in Britain and an arrowhead made by Tim Lively. An arrowhead I made is now in Arizona with Jeff Sanders, the blacksmiths knife I made is with Dana Aker in North Carolina and the friction folder I made is with Chris Price in Virginia.

The only drawback with most makers is the time involved in making a knife essentially for free when they have paying orders backed up. It's easy to get behind even when you have two or three months to make the project. This isn't as much of a problem with new makers, lurkers and the hobby knife makers and the makers who don't do this full time.

I haven't done one in a while but I might be interested.
