Potable Aqua ruined if wet?

I have had a bottle of Potable Aqua for a few years and I noticed a few patches of what looks like rust on the underside of the cap. These must have gotten wet. Does anyone know if they are still usable if the tablets were exposed to damp air?

It's probably not from water.

That stuff rusts anytime after you break the seal and expose the tablets to air. Something about whatever is in those tablets makes anything metal rust. I keep mine inside of a plastic bag in an exterior pocket of my 'packs for that reason. It would suck to destroy a knife or light or multitool because it was near the little bottle.

IMO it's one of those things that should really be replaced once a year.

Good reason to get the Katadyn ones that are individually wrapped.
