I know we have all heard of using Pot-Perm for fire, wound care, and even water treatment but I have not seen any talk about its use as a snow marker. It works really well and turns the snow bright pink. Here's a quick demo.

Now, maybe it's because I don't live near this "snow" stuff, but I have no idea why you would want to mark it. So...why do you mark snow?

Snow marking is usually to signal for help from aircraft or send a message to S.A.R. about where you are. Mountaineers are usually the only ones concerned with the technique but it can be handy for anyone in the right situation.

I always carry a device which allows me to mark snow yellow, any time I please.:D

Never leave home without it.

The snow becomes the ocean and the Pot-Perm becomes the sea-marker. So aeroplanes and other things that fly through the air can see you. ;)

Yet another good use for Potasium Permanginate. Next time it snows here in San Diego, I'm going to give it a try.;)

you guys must have very lax chemical laws down there to be able to buy that stuff. even a chemistry set here (If you can even find one) requires registration with the "man", never mind bulk chemicals like potas permag :(

I haven't bought any in years now, but the last time I did, I just bought it over the counter at the drugstore. I don't know if it's still as easily available now.

ETA. If I understand it, you can get it from pool supply companies (don't know what they use it for).

You can get it from any water treatment company as it is a common chemical for those with well water. Some hardware stores carry it. I got a pound at Home Depot for $18.

I'll have to look into that, I;ve been looking for several years and keep hitting road blocks....

It's also sold at tropical fish/aquarium shops and wherever supplies for ponds are sold.

The only place I found it was at lowes. Pharm, fish store, pool supply, and pet stores look at me like I'm crazy for asking.

That's nothing, I had to show my ID to buy a can of spray paint the other day. :grumpy:

That'd be convienient if you get lost and need to be spotted, but not necessary it can be done with things you can find in the woods, branches and such. Cheeper too.

Most of the people that carry Pot-Perm are mountaineers and Ice Climbers. Once your above the tree line it's not easy to find things that can easily signal a S.A.R. chopper, especially if your injured and in need of medical assistance. I know I sure wouldn't want to put in a call for help for a broken leg and then have to go look for signaling equipment when the only things around are snow and ice.

Gotcha, I guess it would be a pain in the broken leg to go looking for logs on an ice cube.
