Potassium Permanganate Dying

I’ve just bought some Potassium Permanganate to dye some bone with, just to compare the results to Fiebings pro oil dye, and hopefully speed up the process.
What’s the PP best mixed with and is there a mix ratio?
Also is it best to paint it on with a dauber or let the bone soak in the PP solution like you would with Fiebings pro dye?
Thanks

The dye will penetrate deeper, but it can look unnatural.

Mix with water until the solution is saturated-then add a little more just to be sure.
How you apply depends on what you want to accomplish. Apply with a cotton swab for selective coloring. I use it mostly on stag or to match bone coloring during repairs.

If you want to color through you can soak- but a vacuum will work better.

Never done bone but when I do elk antler I soak it for about 30-40 minutes in the PP solution.

How much PP do you mix in water? I’ve used it before but it’s been at least 25 years. I remember boiling the elk antler for XX amount of minutes, then air dry for a few days…but that’s about it.

Wear a respirator if you have one, also eye pro. The fine dust will catch your breath.
Wear gloves. The moisture in your fingers will stain them brown.

Keep your solution in a dark bottle.

The stains are impossible to remove and you will spill. Choose your fate accordingly.

If you have trouble getting it, pharmacies have it for athlete's foot fungal infection
Farm and vet stores for the same thing hoof treatment.

Pot perm won't be a better option than Fiebings pro dye for bone. It won't penetrate. It's a topographical treatment. That said it works amazing on antler. Here's an example of American elk treated with pot perm. I like to soak my antler in the solution. I also daub it for touch up if needed.

The problem with using virgin unicorn urine was that all the unicorns wanted in on the action ... which led to all unicorns becoming celibate ... which led to no more unicorn couples frolicking in the Ellesyn Fields... which led to no more unicorn colts ... which led to total extinction. Kevin Cashen said there are few Oldtimers that still have a crock of VUU, but everyone knows he makes things up.
DeadboxHero has started experiments using zebra pee. We will wait for his results and Larrin's lab testing.
