Just to let you guys know. I just bought 1 lb. of Potassium Permanganate on Ebay for $10.00. What a deal! Everybody was charging an arm and a leg. It seems people use it to treat pond water. Anyhow just thought I'd pass it on.

Pyrotek.org http://www.pyrotek.org has Potassium Permanganate for $8.76 per pound. This is pyro grade chemicals too, so should be pure enough for anything you wanna use it for. I'm scared to ask what knife making use might need PP. :)

Most use it to dye stag handle material.

And hear I was thinking of all these horrible things y'all might be doing with it. :)

FWIW, never ordered from Pyrotek.org before, but have heard good things about them in the past. Not sure if they would be cheaper than that ebay price once ya add in shipping. Might be worth inquiring about though.

I can't believe they can sell those types of chemicals. At any rate permanganate isnt the best choice for those wanting to make illegal items. The total shipping on the stuff I got thru ebay was 6.00. For a total of 16.00. I thought it was good.

I buy it here in town at a place that sells water softeners.I do not renember wat it costs but a pound will last for ever.

Does it come in powder or liquid form and how is it used to color the stag or bone?? Sounds interesting and very useful for those of us that tend to sand too much of the color off our beautiful stag handles during the fitting process.

Most small town drug stores sell it as antiseptic, water purifier, etc.

It is in a powder form. I believe 1 or 2 teaspoons in a quart of water would be enough. It oxidizes the bone surface to a warm brown color or darker with repeated applications. I'm not sure about the above quanity as I havent used it yet. I normally use analine dyes and just wanted to try something different.

It is a great stain. When the item dipped in it is taken out it will be purple. As it dries it will turn a nice brown.I have used it on old moose antler.Up here antler dealers get up to $8 per pound for A grade and you can buy B grade for $4 .

How long do you let it soak in the stuff and then how long does it take to dry out before you can put it on a knife?? Thanks guys!!!

you actually don't have to soak a piece in it, I apply it with a q-tip after the handle is on the knife, a good thick coat will dry in about 20 minutes at room temp, quicker still in the sun.....

I received the PP today. I mixed about 2 teaspoons in a coffee cup full of water (pretty strong solution). Brushed it on and loved the color. Its easy and quick and best of all very natural looking. If your using other types of dye to achieve a somewhat organic color this is the way to go.

Hey BB,
Could I buy a small amount from You? I've heard that it does some pretty nice effects on birdseye maple.
