Hi Guys,

Rene Roy has done some beautiful finishes on curly Maple with Potassium Permanganete. I have been looking around here for some and can't find any. Where can I buy it?
Ques. 2 - Aqua fortis - looks pretty complicated to make - is there any place I can get this stuff?

Thanks,

PJG

Just pretend to be a student and go to a local college. Wear a white lab coat, and stand in line at the dispensary. Ask for a kilo of KMn04 and then run like hell! :D
Actually, if you do a Google search for it you'll find tons of sources. Prices seem to vary quite a bit depending on the intended use. I found this link for lab grade that seems like a decent price: http://www.sciencelab.com/page/S/PVAR/10423/SLP4912

I know we used to use it for all sorts of stuff when I was a chem student, but I have no idea how it's used in knifemaking, what type of solution you make, etc. So, 500 grams could be a lifetime supply or not much at all. What do you do with it?

Also, use distilled water instead of tap/filtered water for making a solution with it.

I have read that you can buy P.P. at a drug store , I havent looked for it yet but was wondering if Walgreens would carry it or maybe one of those old mom&pop type of drug stores.
Good luck.

Potassium Promanganate= easy way to ruin a nice piece of stag, IMHO.

Don't ask me how I know this. :(

I was a big fan of PP but now prefer leather dye. I know the PP will fade in time on stag but have never used it on wood. Rik Palm who lives in Cal was asking were to find it a couple years ago and sent his wife out looking for it. She found out it is illegal in Californai.

I have used good ol' coffee to dye stag. Think I read the reco on here in fact.

I didn't know about the PP/cocaine thing... I do know, however, that you can make a rather nasty bomb using just a wee little bit of that stuff and gasoline. I was under the impression that was the reason it was considered a regulated substance.

Aqua fortis is just nitric acid. small quantities might still be available at chemical supply places like sciencelab.com that someone mentioned earlier. You probably don't want the ACS reagent grade as it is probably a LOT stronger than you need and will dissolve your plumbing (I used to dissolve silver coins in the stuff to separate the silver from the copper), it gives off poisonous nitric oxide fumes, and can cause explosions with some organic materials. Even a 10% solution should still dissolve most metals, other than gold or platinum group alloys, rather nicely.

trivia about permanganate: I read somewhere that in WWII, permanganate solution was the only antiseptic effective against creeping jungle rot. Permanganate is flamable and will ignite on contact with some organics (warm glycerine for example). It is also a good bleaching agent for removing many kinds of stains (the manganese stains it leaves can then be removed with metabisulfites and sulfites, oxalic acid or other methods http://antoine.frostburg.edu/chem/senese/101/inorganic/faq/permanganate-stains.shtml )
