Jetlag had been sticking with me like a disease from a recent overseas trip. So bright and early I grab the goodies of my new package and head for the mountain. Although the snow from the blizzard had slowly disappeared, it was still wintertime here in the Northeast. The low was supposed to be between 12F-16F. I took my day hike kit, some food, and new tool to play with, no blanket, quilt, or sleeping bag (which I don’t own) for me; if I wanted to be warm overnight I must have a long-fire.

As I walked through the forest I was greeted by the beech leaves, brown in their luster and still hanging on until spring time. The only bit of green I did see was in the distance at the tops of some hemlock bows and the never changing mountain laurel. Besides that it was all about the icy trails and crunchy sound of potato chips under my feet as I walked through the forest on this crisp morning!

A built in slip and slide made from ice, which blanketed the trail…

A solemn place for an icy tomb, this log was incased in ice.

My leather possibles bag

When I see the creepy wizard tree I know I’m in my camp…

My woodcraft camp

Simple raised bed with garbage bag mattress and a few logs in close reach.

My goal was to repair my table from the damage it suffered in the blizzard. It was about 90% ruined.

Most of the logs were frozen to the ground and had to be kicked to free them…

Bandana that was folded and left in my camp was flat and icy

Now things are slowly falling into place…

Time to prepare chow, high in calories to fend off the nip of old man winter!

All mixed together with some baked beans…

The nearby creek had…BATMAN!

Long-Fire and the night

I woke up more than usual and did some quick exercises to get the blood flowing and to throw more icy wood on the fire. It was not that exciting or cool!

Morning snuck up on me like a bandit…

Malaysian coffee OLD TOWN

A little bit of pork

I hardened some stakes in the ashes for next time…

My table was in order, I think!

An old man once told me...

"There are many flavors of crazy."

Thanks for posting the pics. How is that new Mora knife? I start to get a bit shy of the more expensive Mora knives as find the cheaper ones work so great. Looks nice though!
