Potential Auction scam thought I’d share

I came across a 2008 Buck 110 G10 BG42 offering on the bay. The seller listed is for $275 plus $18 shipping with the “make offer option”. After a little haggling they accepted my offer for $210 free shipping. I really thought I scored.

I paid immediately via PayPal. Seller contacted me and said they inadvertently cancelled the shipping costs and wanted to return my funds. I suggested 3day flat rate usps shipping was just under $8.00 but I would send a separate PayPal payment of $10.00 to cover the shipping and all was good.

They printed the shipping label and I was notified, then they promptly cancelled it. The reason for cancelling the shipping label was they were “unable to print the label”.

Day 4 I contacted the seller and asked for the new tracking number. I was told they would send it to me later that day. Never received it. (Red flag)

After 3 days I contacted the seller reminding them I had not received a tracking number and they said the $10.00 wasn’t enough to cover the medium shipping box so they didn’t have a tracking number but they wrapped the knife and mailed it but if I didn’t receive and it got lost they would refund my money. (Red flag)

The following day I asked when they thought I should receive it. They promptly responded if I didn’t receive it 6/26/18 they would refund me and stated they should have insured it and sorry it had gotten lost. (Red flag).

I decided not to wait after it did not arrive in today’s mail and tried to open a claim with both eBay and PayPal. I was surprised that eBay wouldn’t address the issue because the cancelled printing label says it would be here no later than today and PayPal suggested I contact the seller via email and ask them to issue a refund and if I didn’t get a response I could open a transaction dispute. Not sure how long PayPal wants me to wait to see if I receive a refund before opening a claim.

Eventually I know through the resolution center I’ll recuperate my initial purchase of $210.00. I’m guessing the added 10.00 gift I sent for shipping is probably gone. It was a gift and not part of the original auction transaction. The worst part after really studying the listing is the pictures posted in the listing look like another listers pictures from a separate auction and I didn’t catch it before buying. That and I was so excited about the purchase I overlooked the fact that this was a new seller with only (6) positive feedback.

After contacting them, ebay normally gives you a date after which you can initiate a dispute through the resolution center. As I recall, that is something like about 10 days. As you stated, you almost certainly will recuperate your original purchase price, it will just take a little time.

6 positive feedback would have raised the red flag for me----I pass on by if the seller is under 100 er so.....don't care what it is---the better the deal the bigger the flag....

Not to be a butt-head but FYI, a typical 110 box is just over 10" long. The cut off for a small Priority box is 8 5/8" inside.
A medium box is the size that would be needed which is $13.75 for either a top or side loader.
Not trying to rub salt in the wound, just offering info.

ebay seller discount price for a medium flat rate box is $12.45

I use white baseball card boxes and ship everything 1st class mail for under 5 dollars up to 1 pound...boxes cost me bout 39 cents each in quantity...

I'm very sorry to hear that you had this problem, but I appreciate the information. Is liba_275 the thief?

At this time I don’t really feel comfortable calling out the seller by name especially since the matter is unresolved. By sharing the story so far I just wanted to let others know how this transaction went and maybe the next person who finds themselves in a similar situation will be able to recognize what the end game is here early on.

Just a follow up to my Paypal/Ebay dispute. Nearly a month since a made payment via Paypal I was issued a refund for my $210.00 purchase but like everyone who posted predicted I am out the additional $10.00 requested for shipping. I am unable to post negative feedback on Ebay regarding the seller Lisa Bauer as the matter was resolved and closed but I think sharing her information with the forum at this point is appropriate.

Christian, its great that you got your money back. It's also nice that you want to protect the rest of us via your warning here. However, the information you have provided is useless. Please link the closed auction number so we see what we need too. Like you I have had my issues with ebay/paypal. Use your bank credit card to make those paypal payments, your bank can protect you by reversing the charge and credit back to your account (they have your back). IMHO ebay/paypal want to protect the folks who make them the most money, sad but true.

Here's the link to the original listing. https://www.ebay.com/itm/BUCK-110-B...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060353.m2748.l2649

In a nut shell I was able to negotiate a very reasonable price for a knife I wanted. She included shipping in the offer and I paid via PayPal. She then came back and said she inadvertently omitted the shipping costs and she was going to refund my money unless I agreed to pay $19.00 for shipping. I wanted the knife and offered her an additional $10.00 for shiping.

Basically I gave someone $10.00 for nothing and I've been out my original purchase of $210.00 for 30 days. I'm sure this seller is no longer going to sell and they will most likely open a different account and do it again. I have no idea if PayPal recuperated my original purchase and I am only trying to help someone else from making the same mistake I did.

If ebay made them quit selling, I think it would be extremely hard to start another sellers account...
