Potential Handle Material??

I was out bird hunting with my Uncle a few weekends ago, and while wondering around we found a bunch of old cow bones.

I was curious as to how well these do for handles? I imagine that they can be dyed, stableized and whatnot. They seemed quite dense and stong...but what do I know?

What do yall think? (I believe that Mr. Bruce Evans is the guy I am looking for. Do you use these Mr. Evans?)

I am looking for something to place on my now handle-less CS SRK, and I am thinking the white bone with the black blade will look cool.

Ok so this prolly won't be too helpfull, but here it is. I have no idea which company I was looking at but there was one who was claiming to be the sole distributor of scale material that was made of dyed and stablized cow bone. It was supposed to be an affordible alternative to mastadon ivory. Like I said not very helpfull but hey.

Everything is potential handle material, cow bones included. Mr. Evans will be able to tell you more about that process. Any bone material needs to be dry and cured or stabilized to avoid shrinkage.
I have used a lot of elk bone for handle material and I doubt there is a great deal of difference in density or structure. That would lead one to think that any four legged animal is OK. There is a huge difference between Giraffe and Elk, but it will all work if prepared properly. Best of Luck and let us know how it goes. Terry

A local maker uses a lot of bone on his scandinavian knives. He cuts a piece for the cross guard or where the cross guard would be then
a bit of timber then some bone etc. Looks real nice. I think he uses fresh bone from the butcher. Has a translucent appearance not bleached but nice anyway.
