Potential handle material????

A friend who's working as an electrican found this sheet in a power transformer that was originally installed in the late 70's or early 80's. It's a nice red color with thin white lines near the surface, reminicient of cafeteria trays. I can't tell if its fiberglass or some sort of micarta. Check out the images and please give some opinions - I'm not willing to work with fiber glass or glass based products at this time.

I bet its like g10, or glass...I tried some very similar and it worked and finished much like g10, which is made for the purposes you describe. Dont breathe it when ground, no matter what it is!

The back and front look the same, random swirl pattern of fibers. Its pretty heavy and about 5/16th thick. Whatever the red is does not seem to be as strong as micarta, I was able to shave a bit of edge off with a knife.

I'm thinking that is some kind of melamine base with some kind of junk fiber in it for strength. I totally agree with the other posts, since the material is unknown, please be careful. -Matt-
 
I also bet it has asbestos in it. I would just stay away from using it unless you like cancer

It is called something like "Glastic". It is used in very high voltage electrical equipment (over 1000 Volts). It consists of glass fiber bound together with some sort of resin and comes in various shapes (sheets, angles, I-beams). It is nasty stuff. The dust from it is very iritating, even the small amount remaining after being shipped from a subcontractor. I avoid the stuff when we have to count the inventory in our factory.

Thanks for the replys. I had already been leaning to getting rid of it, I'm not a fan of cancer. Plus if I don't know what it is...it can happily go to the landfill.

Thanks for the info, the piece I have now was free so I can freely put it in the trash.
