Potential motor for 2 by 72

Hey guys, I'm super new and trying to build my own 2 by 72 grinder. There's an auction in my area and I can get a hold of a Dayton 2N996G which is a 2hp 3 ph motor with a speed of 3475 rpm for around 75$ or a Dayton 11W341 1.5 HP 3-Phase with an rpm of 1170 for less. My question is; are either of these worth buying or should I look elsewhere for my motor acquisition? I have yet to get a chassis but I am planning on purchasing rather than fabrication. Any help is appreciated.

2hp 3 ph motor with a speed of 3475 rpm
The problem with that motor is it's an open frame motor which will allow steel dust to get inside and short out the copper winding.
The Dayton 1.5 HP 3-Phase with an rpm of 1170
This motor is also an open frame as well as being a odd (and low) rpm.

Go to Amazon and enter B073F59R9X into the search box. This will bring up a 2 hp 3ph TEFC motor with 56C face and foot mounting. This is the motor you're looking for. I think it's around $230 at this time - you might have to look for "see all buying options" to see the price.

What 2X72 are you planning to build? How will the motor be mounted?

I'm not sure about which one I want to build, I have heard good things about multiple brands, do you have any suggestions for someone who can't weld?

Welcome enfirno4. Fill out your profile so we know where you live and a bit about you.

Where you live is important as power is different in different parts of the world. Also, someone near you may have a spare motor for free or crazy cheap.
You need a VFD to drive a 3-phase motor, unless you have 3-phase power in your shop (not common).
If you are planning on building a simple single speed grinder you want a TEFC 56-C frame 1800RPM motor. If it will have a VFD, you can use either an1800 or 3600RPM 3-phase motor. Those speeds may be listed as slightly different on some motors and in different countries, but that range is about where they should be.

2HP will usually require a 220VAC line. If you only have 120VAC, you can normally only use a1.5HP motor. A VFD can run a 2HP motor on 120VAC, but the motor will only develop 1.5HP. Connected to 220VAC it will develop 2HP.

We give you Tesla , you have Edison and you still managed to make a mess with power grid 🤣

My grandfather (Leland J. Stacy) knew Tesla. He said Tesla was the craziest genius he ever met (and he knew a lot of geniuses from Einstein to Edison).
He told me that Tesla was cheated by Edison and the world would have been very different if they had continued to work together. He said that Edison was a very conceited man who resented a penniless immigrant (Tesla) telling him he was wrong about electricity, transformers, and motors and that he could fix the problem in a short time. It took a year, but Tesla proved Edison wrong, fixed the problems, and was despised by Edison for it.

Grandpa (inventor of the modern dial phone) once asked Tesla if voice communication could be transmitted through the air on Tesla's coil system. Tesla said that even people could be sent through the air by his coil. It was crazy statements like that that made people ignore some of the great ideas Tesla had. I may still have the letter from Grandpa to Tesla somewhere in his papers.

An aside is that Grandpa said one of the cleverest inventors he knew was Albert Dremel. Albert gave him some of his new Dremel tools to use in creating new phones and systems. I still have one or two of them.

Here is a build along thread with a good set of plans. I think were I building from scratch this is the plans I'd follow. They are bolt together and don't require welding. I prefer the Aluminum for the frame.

This is the new version of the plans

Stacy is correct, you'll need a VFD for a 3 ph motor, and that's the ONLY way to go as far as I'm concerned. If you're buying everything the 3 ph motor is about the same price. With a single phase motor you'll need pulleys, shaft, and bearings. Those will cost about the same (or more?) than a Chinese VFD. While a NEMA 4 VFD is much better, it's also about 4 times as expensive as the Chinese VFD. If money is no object then my strong recommendation would be a NEMA 4 enclosure. I use the open Chinese NEMA 1 enclosures which tend to last 4 to 5 yrs at least.

Of course, if money is no object, then I'd go with a Reeder full package.

Stacy, I wish to say how much we all enjoy hearing about your history. Imagine, knowing somebody who actually knew and spoke with Tesla. WOW - Your comments on Edison is an opinion I had formed over the years myself from reading.

Thanks Ken. I listened intently to my grandfather as he told me about meetings he had with Einstein at Princeton, and about the great minds of the early 20th century that saw far beyond the technology of the time. It was those type of people who created the transistor at Bell Labs before it even had a use.
He told me of Kettering and others who most folks have never heard of but who revolutionized things that we take for granted today.

I remember him referring to Einstein when teaching me some physics (I was 5 or 6) and asked him if he knew Einstein. He went to a shelf and took out some old photo books and showed me pictures of him and Einstein (and many other notables) at a peace conference held at Princeton in the late 40's. They wanted all governments to ban the research and use of nuclear weapons forever. I wish that had worked.

I can't remember who he told me said it, but at the conference one person said, "To end war you have to end hunger".
