Potentially bad situation.

So i was out for a day hike yesterday and was trying out some new traps i learned to build; the day was going great...It was -23 yesterday morning where i live...anyway, i decided it was time to warm up a little and have some lunch and proceeded to build a fire. Everything was ready, i got out my match case and just from moisture on my hands from being cold wet the metal match case foze and i couldnt uncrew the cap to get the matches out. Game over....If that was your only waterproof match case and only source of fire.

I got the fire going with a few easy tries with my firesteel and all was well. But if you are going to buy, or own this metal match case and are planning to carry it in cold weather, either grease the threads, or throw it out.

Its a piss poor design...if i fell through ice on a lake or river, or got wet somhow, soaking my gear, this product would likely fail..In the sense that i wouldnt be able to open the stupid thing..it is water tight though!

i am not saying all match containers that are metal suck, just this one. manufactured by coghlans. Mine quietly sits 100 feet from where i threw it out of rage and disgust lol...Make sure you buy quality gear and not cheap junk.

anyhow, just a product review and a reminder of being prepaired for the cold winter months ahead that some of us have to face.

Wouldn't throwing it in your armpit or crotch for a couple minutes thaw it out? As long as it wasn't covered in ice, that is. Not that it would be a pleasant experience , but I would think that it would work.

That is the type of case I first bought when I was young, probably over 25yrs ago now. I bent it all out of shape just opening and closing it through use and finally had to use a plier to open it at the end. Needless to say I didn't count on it.

I suggest the plastic orange models for inexpensive matchcases. I have several of those floating around.

I have also used 35mm film canisters, for those of you that are old enough to know what those are! ;) And I've used old prescription drug bottles. These are free for those who are trying to do things economically.

There are of course, nice metal/brass cases out there that cost as much as many of my knives! LOL!

I have one of the same cases. I use it in my "junk drawer ". The orange ones are better. The orange ones have a tiny, useless flint on the bottom, but they keep stuff dry and are lightweight.

My thoughts exactly..even if it was covered with ice...better than hypothermia or frost bite...trust me, been there-done those...they both SUCK!

23 below zero
I'm freezing my ass off and it's 58 here !:D
I'm going to weld me up a wood stove next week !
Yeah. Seriously.:o

hahaha nice.

I understand the suggestions about warming it up using body heat, but you would be wasting precious time and body heat weather or not you had alternate fire starting sources.
the fact is that its a poor design. Its like saying that your RC4 got dull in its case but you could sharpen it if you wanted to use it when in a survival situation...as the device sits, it failed. Up here where i live, that kind of thing cant happen...but does...hence me carrying alternate fire starting devices...It can be as cold as -35 or -40 without the windchill factor.. Who wants to put somthing that cold in your arm pit...LOL i guess if that it was all you had, you would know thats what you had to do..but damn...

hey bushman5, do you have any other information about these match cases exploding with strike anywhere matches? I am currently searching...

Hey I recognise that container. The kit connected to my fixed bush blade is made up with two of those (one fire and the other everything else). I remember having to modify the little handle due to it catching on the case and preventing it from being unscrewed ... not to mention I had to go through quite a few of them and find two that operated correctly. I liked them because they're waterproof and I can remove them from the knife sheath to carry them round my neck. I dont think I'll be replacing them too quick.

I had the exact metal case pictured and found it difficult to open on a good day, never mind with cold hands. Another vote for orange.

That metal matchcase is notoriously unreliable. ( Even Cody Lundin thinks so ).
The plastic orange ones are a bit better , unless you overtighten them and fudge the threads, or lose the o-ring.

I basically gave up on matches , and use mischmetal sticks and Bics. Matches have failed me far too often.

just one question..if the container was that cold or ice coated woul it stick to you (like your tongue will to a metal pole)...that would kind of uhhh suck!! (depending on WHERE you decided to thaw it) :)
