I want to put my own first aid kit together and need something to hold the stuff. I want it to be compact. I am only certified up to basic first aid so it doesn't need to store a ton. Mostly I need it to fit:
Gauze pads
Alcohol prep pads
band aids
steri strips
tweezers
water purification tablets
maybe some sort of over the counter painkiller/anti-inflammatory.

I want to keep costs down as much as possible but it needs to be of serviceable quality. If possible I would like to be able to handle it so I can get a good idea of how things could fit before purchasing so availability in places like EMS, Dicks, and Wallmart would be nice.

One good place to look for things like this is the photo department of Walmart or Target. They have a wide range of inexpensive camera and video bags that fit on the belt or can be hand carried. Good for lots of stuff besides cameras. Something to think about.

No doubt you could find something from Maxpedition, but that stuff is more spendy.

where do you live? MEC has some good FAK bags, I prefer something that looks like a FAK so that in the case someone besides me needs to find it, it is easy to see what it is.

Thanks for the responses. The F-1 and BDS look nice but I think I will wait a bit and see exactly what I need before jumping in and getting those.

I live in WNY. What is MEC?

Thanks for the camera bag idea Powernoodle I will definitely check that out.

First thing I think of is at Sports Authority, next to or around the gun case isle they sell small boxes (clear acrylic) witha gasket for around $6-$20. they come in different W-H-D sizes. Perfect for this sort of thing.

The other thing I've used in the past when camping is using the heavy duty UPS/FEDEX 2mm thick ziplock pouches that you can use to put address labels in when shipping packages.

Finally, the OtterBox stuff seems to be cool. It's a little pricier than the stuff at SportsAuthority, but whatever fits your needs and budget.

MEC is canadian, and their inhouse brand stuff is IMHO top notch for the most part. very basic, very good value. But that's neither here nor there as it breaks your handle first requirement. if you have a surplus store near you, decontamination boxes are tough and pretty good value, not waterproof, but that can be solved easily enough.

I use a small "otter box" for a minimal first aid kit. It's tough, water proof and is small enough just to throw in my EDC bag...... and forget about.:p

I use a half gallon freezer bag. Inexpensive, clear so you can see whats inside and fairly durable.

I use an empty plastic bandaid box with a flip lid to hold my stuff.

Another item that works well is a 2 piece slide together plastic bar soap carrier for a mans shaving kit. Or a plastic slip together cigarette case.

Yeap.

I got a pretty neat little case at Best Buy a year or so ago - small flap pocket and big area , it has enough room for a standard small first aid kit and then some , also has a belt loop , zippers... maybe about half the size of a paperback book.

My girlfriend gave me a zipped case/bag she had made by Dickies , it's red and made of heavy duty material , I keep a lot of first aid stuff in that , in my truck.

Just a suggestion...not for a kit....but for contents....Drop the alcohol preps and get some betadine swabs instead...

Target sells a toiletries bag for 99 cents. They are a little bit bigger than the Maxped Cocoon. I use them as FAK's and organizers in my main bag.

You can find them in the section that has the small sample/travel sized sundries.

Don't forget latex (or non-latex) gloves, and bandaging tape. Also, I carry a couple large trauma pads as well as a couple Kotex pads (the thick ones) in my First Aid kit, as they are great for bleeding control. (I'm a EMT/medic.).

I like the suggestions about sealing your kit in a ziplock. I keep mine in one no matter what quality container/pouch I keep it in.

I use the bag my old electric razor came in for my son's FAK in the diaper bag. Perfect size and perfect fit in the bag.

I pretty much use any old bag I have laying around the house.
