I pounded my first steel yesterday night! Boy, forging is hard work!

I started with a half circle worth of rusty coil spring and ended up with a somewhat flat bar...not much progress for a few hours at the forge, but I'm stoked! (pun intended :p )

Well, I think I've started myself on a nice long road, but I can't wait to finish my first knife! I'm already imagining how nice "Steven Roos, MS" would sound! :D :p

I'll be sure to post when I have something that resembles a knife. ;)

Whatever you do, DO NOT start making damascus! There will be no saving you from the addiction.:)

Anyway, congratulations, and you have fun on the journey.

What kind of anvil do you have? Just curious and nosey.:D

But if I don't start making damascus, how will I ever get the "MS" by my name? ;)

Actually, the "anvil" is fashoned from a piece of railroad track! A little ghetto, but it works. A real anvil is coming soon...

Now Youve done it! You are already hooked! Its the most addictive hobby there is. Join the ABS now and in 5 years you can test for your MS. It will be here before you know it. Damascus is a real desease. The only thing that cures the itch is another billet.

Yep He's Done !! All you can do Now is Start Excersizing Your Strong Arm !! Give it About 6 Month's It Will Be Twice the Size of the Other !! No Wait Just Joking Ya !! It Damascus is Very Addicting Just one More Bar Ok Now Just a Couple Like This / A Couple Like That!! Ha Ha You are Hooked For Sure !! Welcome to The Crazy Man's Hobby !!

I agree that a good anvil will help alot. Makes a big difference, eventhough mine is starting to only be used for setting the initial weld and straightening out the blade after the power hammer is done with it.:)

Start looking for a nice hammer or press, don't have to get one right away, but if you continue, I am sure you will have one soon.;) It is amazing the work they can do. I have a 25# LG and it will take a 1 x 1 x 12 billet to .375 x 1.25 x 24 in 3 or 4 heats. That billet seems to stay hot for ever. I have gotten to the point now where I even forge the blade to shape with it. Saves alot of wear and tear on my little arms. :)

Man you gotta love this hobby!!!:D

Get a good anvil and that will make alot of difference. If your using a piece of coil spring its pretty tuff even with a decent anvil. Some of us old farts still doing everything by hand, just ask Gib. When you get old and your arm hurts makes you feel like your still alive. It ain't that bad, its the getting old thats going to kill you.

Have fun with it, it don't have to be damascus.......Ray
