I'm wondering what is the powder coat made of on the RAT knives. Is it just a really durable paint? or is it something else?

Sorry if this has been asked before. I looked back through a few pages of this forum and did not see anything about it.

no it is powder coat.... it is a different process of painting VS. Electro static or wet painting...
Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. The main difference between a conventional liquid paint and a powder coating is that the powder coating does not require a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid suspension form. The coating is typically applied electrostatically and is then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a "skin." The powder may be a thermoplastic or a thermoset polymer. It is usually used to create a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint. Powder coating is mainly used for coating of metals

There are several advantages of powder coating over conventional liquid coatings:

1.Powder coatings emit zero or near zero volatile organic compounds (VOC).
2.Powder coatings can produce much thicker coatings than conventional liquid coatings without running or sagging.
3.Powder coating overspray can be recycled and thus it is possible to achieve nearly 100% use of the coating.
4.Powder coating production lines produce less hazardous waste than conventional liquid coatings.
5.Capital equipment and operating costs for a powder line are generally less than for conventional liquid lines.
6.Powder coated items generally have fewer appearance differences between horizontally coated surfaces and vertically coated surfaces than liquid coated items.
7.A wide range of specialty effects is easily accomplished which would be impossible to achieve with other coating processes.

:D I painted electro statically for a number of years and powder coating is some tuff stuff.
I do miss shocking poeple with the paint gun though ;)

Really, I thought it was yet another informative post from a man that just knows a little about a ton of different stuff ;). you do any drinking with the Mailman from "Cheers"?

no but I seen ever episode of Cheers does the count...:D

:p
Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got.
Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot.

Wouldn't you like to get away?

Sometimes you want to go

Where everybody knows your name,
and they're always glad you came.
You wanna be where you can see,
our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where everybody knows
Your name. :)

You wanna go where people know,
people are all the same,
You wanna go where everybody knows
your name.

Tony, You left out that it takes minimal training to apply powder coat. Training a good liquid painter takers time to consistently deliver a good even coat without sags, runs, etc.. Several years ago I went into a powder coat room that hadn't been running in years and got it running in a day putting good powde coat on and I'd never done it before although I knew the principle. The powder literally does the job for you if you get it on even half way right. But it sure gets all over every piece of clothing and hair on you:) Mike
