powder coating

Nope. Jerry has said it would take temps in excess of 900 degrees to affect INFI's HT.
But he was prolly drunk when he said it.:D

Had a Busse DLC treated by IonBond for a Buyer once. Called Jerry to be sure, since the process was lengthy (something like 18 hours, IIRC) and a considerable amount of the time during this would have the knife at a constant 425 degrees F. He said that this doesn't come close to the temps required to affect his HT. I should note that this knife's handles were removed for the treatment, and I don't know what temps micarta & G-10 can take.

It came out great.

WOW, that's beautiful.

I'm pretty sure Micarta starts getting pretty soft and squishy around 350* G10 not so much and can handle higher temps.

Since we dont have the competition finish anymore I vote to get rid of the crappy coating and use DLC instead. Looks MUCH better and will go thru materials easier

That really does look great. Was it satin underneath that or can you do it to a fresh stripped CG?

That's a question for IonBond. However, I was told that the cleaner the surface, the better the results. This one has a Busse satin finish underneath.

Most Micarta (canvas) can run on sustained temps at around 300'F-310'F, G-10 can run up to 356'F for sustained periods. Of coarse different manufactures say different things but you get the idea. So if your doing a Powder coat I'd say remove the grip plates for sure. I know running in turbines how hot the fields get and that's why we use G-10 and G-11 which G-11 has even a higher Temp level than G-10.

That DLC coated knife is dern sexy!!!

DLC would very likely be cost prohibitive. I'd bet it would add at least $150 to the cost of each knife (and that would be on top of the charge for satin or double-cut finish, if you want it to look nice).

I had a 1911 completely re-finished in DLC not too long ago (pics have been posted here before). The DLC will have the same surface appearance as the metal underneath did. Polished metal with DLC applied over it will look like a good hot-blue. I suspect that knife above was glass-bead blasted (like a DC finish) prior to the DLC treatment. I should also note that IonBond does an in-house cleaning prior to treatment, as the metal surface must be completely clean and residue-free for the DLC to bond to the host metal properly (at a molecular level).

I do love the customer service here. What other brand can you say "I'd like to mod my knife, how is this for an idea?" And instead of CS ignoring it, saying bugger off, or saying "don't mod the knives" the answer is "yeah sure, no problem, that won't affect the knife." :P

Because my local guy will charge $15-$20 and no shipping. If I send a knife in it'll be about $30 just in shipping alone. Then add the $30-$40 on top of that and you get $60-$70 vs $20. Plus one blade I want done is my scrapivore in zombie green. The yard won't do it and they won't authorize busse to do it.

Just an update. Took me a while to get around to it but here is what my local powder coating guy did. I've been pining for a zombie green scrapivore. This looks exactly like the Busse zombie green. Now I just need to remove the coating from the edge. I had to put some glow-in-the-dark/reflective paracord on there.
