From Russian Patent site (by Vadim Denisov, Norilsk):

Edge is placed in container with special powder (rich C and N content) and cooked in owen 500-550 C. As a result on edge IronCarbonNitrit is formed (I am not sure but it seems like diffusion).

I am sure that Russian wil not be able to start producing this powder which anybody can use in kitchen owen to make good edge :(

Thanks Vassili.

As I understand it penetrates (from second link):

"...до 1% на глубину до 0,1 мм; дополнительное образование мелкодисперсных карбидов Fe3W3C..."

Increasing Carbon content to 1% into 0.1mm depth, additional development of smalldispersed (?) carbides Fe3W3C...

Wear resistance increase - 1.3-1.4 times.

Thanks, Vassili.

P.S. As I understand it is some kind of powder bath for blade.

Yes, that is pretty shallow penetration though, it would be quickly honed away with sharpening unless the edge was very thin, such as with a deep hollow grind. How does it effect toughness?

Since the temperatures are given in degrees Celsius you are not going to do this in your household oven. It is not that low a case hardening temperature. You are up in the vicinity of 1000 degrees F.

Yes, sorry, forgot that scale on owen in Farenheit.
I think thak 0.1 depth can be increaesed - this is just patent not a product.

I heart about hardening in liquid iron cast which also increase carbon content in the edge surface - more like legend, I think, one guy really tryed this, but without huge success.

Thanks, Vassili.
