powder steel questions

I am thinking of purchasing a knife for my dad for the holidays and have a few questions.

I am looking to get a fallkniven folder. I am thinking about either the U2 or the P1. There is about a $100 price difference between the two and I am wondering why this is the case.

Also can someone please explain the difference between laminate powder steel (3G) which is what the P1 has and the Super Gold Powder Steel that the U2 has? I would be interestd in learned phyiscal differences and performance differences. From what I have read, the SGPS is better but not sure why, especially considering the U2 is way cheaper than the P1.

Also if you would just like to voice your opinion on which is a better knife i will be glad to listen.

I apologize if this has been discussed, I normally post on the wilderness and survival forum and the search function keeps returning "page cannot be displayed"

MY understanding is that one is the actual steel used for the edge and the other is the combination of the edge steel and its laminate. My guess is that 3G is the edge and SGPS is the package. Im pretty sure Im wrong.

For the two knives, you cant really compare them. They were build for different purposes. The price is mainly different because the P folder is larger and has better handle material.

The U2 has a blade and plastic everything else, thus lower cost. The terminology that Fallkniven uses is confusing. SGPS is used as the core of a laminated blade and that laminated blade is called 3G. Details of the knives can be found in discussions in the Fallkniven section of www.knifeforums.com .The owners of Fallkniven are on that forum. The SPGS is a great steel and I refer to it as a super steel. In any case Fallkniven gives you excellent value.

The u2 has a powdered steel core and softer 420 steel sides of the lamination. The P with 3G has a powdered steel core and VG steel sides on the lamination. 3G means three G ( gold class) steels.are used. Both are great knives , but different styles.

Thanks for your clarifications so far. So which blade will result in being sharper and which will result in longer edge retention? Thanks again for your help as I probably don't quite have the knife knowledge that you all do.

I tested 3G on manila rope and to my great surprise it does not show performance much better then AUS8, same show SG2 - I was really disapponted in Takefu Special Steel product - being powder metallurgy steel and 62 HRC they suppose to be close or even better then CPM S30V, but instead they show performance as much cheaper steel:

Thanks, Vassili.
