POWDERED CPM152 versus S30V

Is CPM152 (not CM152) considered to be as good as S30V in edge retention and resharpening and overall quality?

I have read some posts where people say no, but they seem to have been comparing CM152 (not the powdered version) instead of CPM152.

The reason I ask is because the BP110 is the same price as the AG110...are the steels comparable as well? If not, why do people buy the BP110 over the AG110?

Also, am I correct in that the AG110 is Black coated and the BP110 is a lighter blue grey color?

Thanks so much...

The steel is actually called CPM 154 CM. CPM is Crucible Particle Metallurgy. This is the same type of process they use to make S30V, although they are different in their chemical makeup. 154 CM is a different steel, and is not a CPM product.

But you already knew all of that, it appears. I personally think those steels are very similar, and would really like to get the BP 110 sometime. Why would I choose the BP? Mostly, I like the look of the non-coated blade. I am sure they are both great knives. I know mostly everyone on the forum that has the 110 AG loves it. The BP 110 just hasn't been out as long.

You may get some different answers on the coloration thing.

The 2004AG laying here is ever so slightly darker than the 2005 CPM154 laying here.

But then the 2006AG is shiny black "polished" like a stainless polished blade, only black.

I doubt seriously the finish will make a difference as to how they cut deer meat.

It doesn't cover the CPM...but here's a cool chart down in the belly of this link: http://www.buckknives.com/technical_steel.php

Like Larry, my 110AG is darker than my 110BP. They both cut SPAM paper thin.
Will post a comparison pic when the sun comes up.

I for one can't wait to see those pic's....will there be any spam brother goose...I'm hungry and just got home from work. Fried Spam sound good to me;).

I don't think its a question of buying one over another... I think its more like trying out each steel! ;)

Sorry but they are both coated, one is just a tad different recipe/ color. :)

The Cabelas 110 has the AG logo on the blade. Some peeps like that, others remove it. The BP has no logo.

The color on my BP blade is like finely blued gun steel.

I was just going by the pictures and forgot. They are both coated. I do not like the logo on the blade of the 110 AG, so i'll still say i'd prefer the BP.

I will pick one up one of these days, honest. Maybe then I won't forget that it has a coated blade.

Maybe we can convince Gander Mountain or LL Bean or someone that they need an exclusive 110 series with BG42! And no coating on the blade!

I actually like the coating on my AG 110.
It's not a painted on coating....more like anodized....the brushed steel beneath the coating is still clearly visible.
And while it does appear rather dark in some pictures, it's really more of a metallic graphite color; kind of like "pencil lead".

As you can see, I removed the AG logo from the blade.

Thanks for the 110 smugmug shot brother goose. The BP & AG blades almost look the same in your photo:eek::confused:.

Allen,

Nice photo of the washed AG...no Logo :(. That shows what Ratty was talking about in the light colored AG. I just took a look at my "04 & 05" AG's. The "04" looks just like Allen's photo....the "05" is jet black and glossy. I like the black glossy look better...figures that this is my EDC...I like the pimp look. Any of you have multiple years of the BP's for color variation...if any????

Yep John...they arr rook arike. Just a shade off...liquid sunshine today so pics suck.
But, ya get in close and the 110AG coating is smoother/cleaner on my set.

well i have a 560 with s30v from post falls and it does not have any coating on it!
there is a tad of darkness close to the point on the back side but the rest of the blade looks like .... well steel... no color but like crome has no color..
so i think the coatings could come off and am certen the coatings will scratch showing that plain steel color...
if it is a user consiter that the coating will come off as the edge showes it does not go through the steel and will look like any other user after time...
coatings are coatings no diffrent then blueing on a gun... it will ware off ...
and i have to recomend yorkeys for buck hunting....

560 with S30V blade? Sounds like a Buckbenza if I ever heard of one!

I can't use my fox terrier for Buck hunting, he's too much of a Reeve fan to do me any good...

I thought that CM stood for Crucible Metallurgy, and that CPM stood for Crucible Particulate Metallurgy. I was under the impression that the chemical make-up of both steels was identical. It's just the manufacturing process that differs.

TC

Ok, I just checked on it: CPM stands for Crucible Particle Metallurgy.

I couldn't say if the chemical makeup of 154 CM and CPM 154 are the same, but i'd guess that you are right about this Hondo.

schiesz

Hondo is correct. Steel alloy content for the two "154" steels is the same but the process is different with CPM steels having more uniform carbide structure -- supposedly tougher too. CPM S30V and CPM 154 are both very good blade steels. Both the AG110 and BP110 knives are excellent folders, but my BG42 110 customs are excellent too :)
