I want to start experimenting with powder metal forging to do mosaic damascus. I have access to a lot of powders but most say stainless on the cannisters with number designations that mean nothing to me.
Where can I find a listing of these numbers. Or better yet where can I get knowen materials like powdered 1084, 15n20, or other hardenable carbon steels. Is there any knife supply outlets handling these materials or does anyone want to sell me a few pounds if they have extra.

They will ship to Canada, but the only way they ship is by UPS.
Problem one no UPS service here.
Problem two UPS will contract to a local carrier but UPS charges $25.00 plus tax for customs clearance on all cross border shipments. Post charges $5.00.

I have been experimenting with the powdered 1084 with out any sucess. Bruce B. gave me some hints, but I still get voids. When you cut the billet the grain structure is coarse. I am welding it at 2400 deg.

Robert, There must be powder metal in canada. I think it is too high priced to get it there just to experiment.

George, Ive had really good luck welding it in a container of mild steel. No voids. You can heat it to 2300 degrees and leave it in the forge for a long time and work it slow. The mild steel container will protect it from oxygen but also prolongs the powder inside from reaching welding heats. Dont worry about taking the extra time.

Cans and cans of powdered metal. I finally found one with somthing printed on it that I could understand. Would either of these work for powder forging of mosaic damascus?

C .7 Si 4.4 Cr 15.0 B 3.1 Fe 4.2 Ni bal.
normal hardness RC 59

C2.2 Si2.5 Cr8.3 B1.7 WC43.0 Fe2.6 Ni bal.
normal matrix hardness RC 64

This product is normally used for hardfacing.

I beleive that WC is tungsten carbide powder.

Bruce B. Do you have a address or phone number to the place you get your powdered metal from.I would like to get some and try iy myself.
Thanks,
Bruce E.
