Where can I obtain some powdered metal?
Im looking to get some powdered 1095 or 1084 and some tool steel shim stock to create a pattern. Im also trying to find out the best material to make the canister out of( that comes off easy) And perhaps a recommendation as to the length of the canister. Any help in these ereas would be greatly appreciated:) :) :)

Hi there-

There are quite a few places where you can get it, but I buy it from Jeff Carlisle at Swain's Spring Shop in MT. I buy 1084, 4600E, and 1018 powder from him.

The shim stock is pretty easy to obtain. But you can use 1084, 15N20...whatever inside the can. Shim stock is usually too thin.

I've heard if you use a ss can, it will pop off...but I just use a plain carbon can and either leave it on for a grey line, or grind it off with the grinder.

Good luck!

THANKS NICK
:) Thanks for the help. I still would like to take you up on your invite to winlock to check out your shop and pick up some pointers. Have you heard of a grind&hammer-in in our erea any tim ein the near future?

:o :o :o

Sorry I forgot the number for Jeff:

1-406-452-1246

Just ask for Chris or Jeff and tell them Nick Wheeler recommended them for powder steel. Their main business is spring projects, so sometimes us knifemakers catch them off guard.

Very cordial, great to deal with folks!

Most cans are usually made up at 4-6", like 3x3 or 4x4, but I saw some monsters at this last hammer-in...Bruce Bump and I were a little shocked :)

I'll help if I can!!! :D

I made a 4 x 4 x 6inch cannister and brought it home from the hammer-in in Ephrata. It wont fit in the door of my forge! It is a small one compared to the mongo cans there.

I am starting to use L6 for my newest cans so I dont have to grind off the mild steel. It is pretty thick and leaves soft spots if you dont grind it all off. You can see it easy if you etch the bar before accordianing.

I am starting to think about another hammer-in here at my shop in Tenino, WA after the first of the year. My good friends Nick and Tom Ferry would be here of course -- who else would be interested in coming?

I would be interested in making the trip down from Whidbey island to Tenino for a hammer in,especially if it were Forum folks. Hopefully it wont be Apr 25-27, thats the NWBA spring confrence, this year its @ St Helens. Theres a bunch knifemakers there and a few master Bladesmiths. Not to mention abundent tools for sale.. Any way I hope a Northwest hammer in does happen, keep me informed....
