a friend gave me 3 new blades for a power hacksaw, Capewell Safetech High Speed Edge.1/16x1 1/4x14 in. Would these be L6 steel or something else?

Sounds like high speed steel. It's brittle ... some people have made blades from it and they hold an edge great and won't break if you're careful, but -- are these really only 1/16" thick? I've never seen a power hacksaw blade that thin. If they are ... maybe you could make very short blades from it....

yes they are about .055 on the calipers, also they must have a hardened edge as there appears a distinct difference in hardness of the teeth than the back. I was thinking of making a nice butcher knife for slicing up the round steaks on that big bull elk I'm going to get this fall!!!

check it out.

That's a bimetal blade -- only the edge is high speed steel. I don't know what the rest of the blade would be ... I hope somebody does.

The backing on the bimetal blades I use come out at 56-58 on the RC. The ones I have are Simons. I've had good results with the skinners and camp/hunter knives I 've made from them, and the ones that are all high speed steel. If you would like to see any of them or have any questions you can e-mail me at dakameni@att.net.
