power hammer counter weight question

Ok, guys I'm going to build my own power hammer, I think I have a pretty simple idea but have some bugs to work out. I know some power hammers have a counter weight to off set the weight of the hammer on the motor. So my question is the counter weight in a straight line to the hammer or is it a few say 15 degrees one way or the other to pull the power hammer back up?

I believe the hammer (moving part) and the spring operate as a resonate system. Look up resonate frequency (mechanical) in a physics book.

The counter wieght is inline with the ram on the fly wheel but not as heavy as the ram. It keeps the hammer more in balance with less rocking when running.
