Ok, ive finally pinched enough pennies to buy a power hammer. This will hopefully speed up my work a bunch, as of yet everything ive done has been with a 3lb. hammer.

Any how, A freind of mine has a 100# Beuadry hes rebuilding, but it wont be done until at least late Nov. Ive looked into the air hammers, specifically the Sayha. From all accounts its an awesome hammer, but something in my gut is not commiting me to the air hammers.

The Lil Giants are obviosly the most popular, but theres quite a bit of "monkey motion" going on with them. The good thing is you can still get parts for them easily from Sid.

The Star hammer is similar but with a leaf spring instead of coil, seems like a better idea.

The Beaudry is from all accounts a great hammer, smoother running, harder hitting but with better control the the industry standard which is the Lil Giant.

Of course there are the industrial hammers that are out there, generally more expensive as they are usually rather large hammers. These would include the Nazel, Bradely, Beche, Champersburg etc...

So lets here what you have, what youve used and what you think of the different hammers in general?

AND IF ANYONE KNOWS OF A GOOD HAMMER FOR SALE, EMAIL ME!

Im not a power hammer owner anymore. I sold mne to pay for enough parts to build a press. There are definate advantages to the press. The main one is the dies can be changed. Have you considered a press?

yeah im considering a press as well. i will likely build one, as they seem fairly simple in design....but i still want/need a hammer:p

I use a Jeff Carlisle press for making all my Damascus billets. For general forging I use a homebuilt airhammer following the Ron Kinyon plans. A press and hammer are two different tools each excelling at certain functions. Remember, always apply the best tool for the job at hand when possible. Pictures at my site: www.blacksmithrick.com

Hey Matt,

You should come up to the Southern Ohio Forge Association's Roundup next month at the end of Sept.

I am sure there will be alot of great stuff there. Harlan Sudemeier has regularly set up there with Little Giant stuff, etc.

I am about 1/4 mile from the Smithy there at the fairgrounds.

If you want more opinions than you can shake a dead cat at go here junkyard some of these guys use a hammer everday. I'd hold out for the beudry were it me:)
