Well, ya'll saw this in the other thread, but here's my 100 Pound Little Giant. I completely refurbished her about 5 or 6 years ago (replaced the main spring, built a brake system and put a small guard between my face the the spring), and have been giving her a steady workout for the past year. I sure like this hammer. Also in the picture is my Blu (which doesn't get much use).

Robert, I have a big blue 100lb. hammer that I really enjoy. How come yours doesn't get much use? Pretty expensive paper weight

Hey Don, I love the picture of Cliff Parker wearing shorts working on a billet of damascus on your 100 pounder.

Robert, trying to figure out how you use those hammer's in your rocking chair business.

How's that thing run?

Smooth like butter. But it's the only air-hammer I've ever used so I have no basis for comparison...

By the way, I just want to add that this thread is already getting me hot and bothered. I can't wait to see some more hammer-porn! :D

Yes, more hammer pics please :D

Ray, that is a cool picture, it's priceless. Cliff forges like that at his place but usually without a shirt, gets hot down there in central Florida.

Robert, I think I could really hurt myself in your shop trying to get the steel from your forge to the LG hammer :p

Tony I like the looks of that Champion. Also some 2'' wide dies would move steel much faster.

Don

I ordered some 3" wide combo dies. I figured if 4"square where doing as much as they are.... well, a nice combo die would be interesting. the dies on it where there when I found it, and I'm pretty sure they're for forging points on breaking hammer bits. I welded up the things to flat, and I'm just waiting on the other dies to really play.

Here's a video of the hammer in action, forging down 2" round stock...slow.wmv right click and save.... it's a WMV file and right at 1 meg. I slowed it down so you can see the spring pack returning energy to the ram. (The real reason I took the video)

Tony, VERY cool video, that hammer is an animal. Combo dies are a good choice, with drawings dies you could squirt steel out the other side :p Your hammer does seem to be working very good.

Don

I'm not sure Fred. I've had the 100 LG for a pretty long time, but bought the Blu because everyone was raving about air hammers. Well, I probably didn't spend enough time with it, but I never did get comfortable with the Blu. I think there's something amiss with it anyway, it sure doesn't seem to have much power. Could be my compressor, but I don't think so, it's a 3 stage unit. Air consumption is very high with the Blu, but I had been warned of that. All I'm comparing it to the the LG though, and I've never operated another Blu. I'll end up selling it or trading it off for something, then will look at one of those Sayha (sp?) that Tom Clark sells :p No, what I'll probably do is get another 100 lb. LG :D

Thanks Don, I've got a video of what happens when your die key's aren't tight enough if anyone wants to see it :)

I've been impressed by every champion hammer I've seen run, that's why I got this one, well, that and the price was good.

Morning Robert, There might be something amiss with the rugulater/ damper control. I removed the one on my machine, on advice from S kayne. There should be no lack of power or control with this machine. Fluid in the system really makes the machine feel lifeless and sluggish also. If you were a bit closer, I'd stop by and take a look. HAVE A GOOD DAY, Fred

When I got my Bullhammer it was sluggish and erratic at first too (I bought it used). On the advice of the very knowledgeable folks at Big Blu, I bought a new air filter and oiler and the operation improved dramatically.

Now I've actually spent a great deal of time on the phone with the folks at Big Blu. I bought my air compressor from them, as well as the new filter and oiler, and they were always extremely helpful. Knowledgeable folks - extremely friendly, courteous, and generous with their time. I would suggest giving them a call. Worst case scenario - you spend ten minutes of your time, learn a few things about air hammers, and pay maybe $0.35 on the long distance phone call. Best case scenario, they give you some great information, you tune up your hammer, fall in love with it and never have to think about spending $8,000 or so on a new Sayha.

Seriously, give them a call. 828-437-5348

okay, another video...

This one, forging 2.5" 52100 bar down to about 1" thick to make some clap dies for ornamental ironwork.

52100.wmv Video's about 1 meg again. (Sorry, kinda grainy)

Tony, that's the best hammer of them all :D I love that thing. I've never seen one until now. I guess they didn't ever get down into South Texas. I'd sure like to find one. Does a good job to, really efficiant.

Fred, you got me thinking, so I called the "Got Blu?" guys, and told them how it was acting, and what I could do. A guy called Dean said the lubricant I'm using on the hammer gibbs wasn't right. I've been using whatever was laying around, from 30 wt. oil to white lithium spray grease. He said to clean all of that off of the gibbs, and then use the lightest weight oil I could find, which I did (I had a quart of gas turbine oil, probably about 10 wt. or less). It did seem to help a little I guess. But gosh does it go through the air, especially when forging a blade, since you have to blow the hammer all the way down before it'll hit the steel. Maybe it's acting like it's suspossed to now, I probably will never know until someone drops in that's used one.

Robert,

I've only had limited experience running air hammers that where comercial, but I know that I've always felt like they hit kinda lightly.

I nearly bought a Kuhn hammer back a few years ago, but when I tested it, I decided that I couldn't justify the money for the work it did.

I'm hoping that one day I'll find the 125# version of the champion to compliment this one, hmmm now that's a hoss!
