Hi, I'm in the market for a multi tool and have narrowed my selection down to the Power Lock or Wave. My brother in law has a Wave and likes it very much but the SOG Power Lock seems like an excellent tool as well. I already know a lot about the Leatherman but not so much about the SOG. It would be great if you could give me your opinions on which tool is best. Thanks

Hi David,

First of all, welcome to BladeForums.

Leatherman makes a great product and has been making them for many years. I believe that SOG makes a product that is both equally good and very unique. Here's some of the benefits of a SOG Multitool:
  • SOG uses excellent materials. The PowerLock is all stainless steel.
  • We feature hex bolt construction (allowing the user to custom adjust, disassemble and clean, as well as customize the tool).
  • The PowerLock has one of the easiest to operate component-locking devises on the market.
  • Our PowerPlier series features a simple, one-handed-opening method, similar to a butterfly knife.
  • And then there's Compound Leverage. Because of the unique gear-driven system, you get twice the gripping power.
There are other benefits, but these are some of the main ones.

If you have any specific questions you'd like answered, either ask them here, or feel free to email me.

Get the Gold TiNi one, it is just plain cool!!!
When you flip that puppy open one-handed, it sure gets noticed!!!

One the other hand, it is also harder to steal, since there are few gold multi-tools around.

Seriously though folks... I have the TiNi Powerlock, and just love it. I have never tried the Wave, but here that it is a good tool, the biggest benefit is the ability to get the blades out quicker. Personally I like the ability to change the tools to suit my needs (i.e. a Robertson driver). I use my SOG all the time, and will tell anyone who asks, and even some who don't!!!

Besides, look at the service SOG gives you!!!

Hi,

Haven't ever seen or used a SOG. We're still 3rd world here.

However, I have had the 'pleasure of a Leatherman Wave, and though I like the overall design, weight and feel, if you want a multi-tool that has locking blades that don't "move" when in the locked position then don't buy a Wave. I have personally inspected 20+ and at least one blade has what I consider to be too much movement for a locking blade, even if it is a type of liner-lock. :(

I'm currently discussing this with Leatherman themselves.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for posting your comments here. Comparisons are a very good thing.

For your information, we do have representation in South Africa (assuming that's the Cape Town where you’re located). They're Blade Trader in Johannesburg. If you contact them, they might be able to inform you of locations around South Africa where you could handle one of ours.
