I saw these today while looking for sharpening goodies at the local woodworking shop. They come in a kit and are made of stacked leather about 3/4" thick and ~4" in diameter. They appear to be meant to mount in a drill press or hand drill and are recommended for slow turning at about 600 - 700 rpms. Is anyone familiar with them? It came with an adapter for the drill chuck, the wheel, and a small stick of white compound. It was shown using the edge of the wheel.

I have the V wheel, it works ok but it does need to be used at slow speed. I have mine on a mini bench grinder and the slowest it goes is about 1000rpm, overheating is a big problem at this speed. They probably work better at lower speeds but I found it to be not very practical for knives.

the paper buffing wheel will do a much better job. i used to use a leather 2" disc to do guthooks until i had mike send me a small piece of a paper wheel stock to cut down to use instead. a leather wheel can round an edge off a lot easier if the blade is held wrong compared to a paper wheel.

Hard leather vs hard parper... I don't see how rounding the edge would be a problem.

These wheels are pretty hard, to roll the edge you would need to be pressing so hard you would probably stop the wheel. Sharpening with any round object poses problems with angle control, its just hard to find the flat spot ;)
