Powering A Power Hammer??

Grasshoppa.....electric is much quiter and cheaper to run than gas. I run my 100 pounder with a 5hp Lesson 1725 rpm 220 volt single phase. I bought this motor from Northern Hydraulics 7 or 8 years ago for around $250 +/- Good luck and have fun with your new hammer.

I don't know, Don. Maybe where you live, electricity is cheap - certainly not around here. I'm guess that here in New England, there would not be a heck of a lot of difference over another. That said...

Grasshoppa: Listen to me. You work in the food industry. Certainly, you can come up with as much waste vegetable oil as you want, right? Why not get yourself a diesel generator, and convert it to WVO? You'll never have to worry about paying an electric bill ever again.

There may be a lot of cheap Iranian uranium available soon. Maybe you could construct a rudementary nuclear power plant.

I'd go electric unless 220 is a problem where you are. The forge noise and hammering will be enough racket. Noise tires you out over time.

sounds good Don but the 220 may be a problem
thats the main reason i was thinking gas. the noise isn't too big of an issue. i'm usedto running a generator for the shop anyway, and not to mention running ig"s press gets loud. but i'll still look into both options unless someone has some great info on one or the other. if i go with gas what brand should i look up?
Higgy: i wish i could run old veg oil i'd be all set! i have plenty of buddies that junk that stuff. its actually expensive to dispose of from what i hear!

so any more suggestions for power?

Don: should i run maybe a 3HP motor? should be enough for a 40Lb hammer right?

thanks again guys

i was just looking into honda-engines.com
taking a look at the honday GX100 and GX120 3 and 4 horse power
the 120 seems to have some other options like gear reduction (whatever that means) and special air filters and such. any input on these? i know there are some small engine guys out there

Put I.G in a big hamster wheel with some gear reducers.
Boy!!! Where is Kit when you need him?????
GrassHoppa!!! To bad you don't have 3 phase. That motor on that big hydraulic unit or the 4 HP downstairs.
