Practical Edged Weapons seminar

In a word, superb !

Ernie started it off with warm ups and foot drills, finishing off with drills on the heavy bag which was a work out in itself.

Then was Bram Frank showing the use of the Gunting and just how much it hurt in the pain compliance role. Believe me, I still have the brusies from it.

Then was the Strider Guys. What can I say, I've never seen the 'knife cutting through a chair' before, and it was something to see. Mick came out in full gear and punched his blade straight through the metal chair seat before he began his talk. Fantastic !

Steve Tarani gave us an insight into the Kerambit and how deadly it was. For a big guy, he moves fast and the blade was even faster. Just ask Mick, whose comment after being left tied up in knots on the floor with Steve said "Distraction cut ? ? You've just slashed my throat, Femoral arteries and cut my fu**ing d*ck off, and now you worry about distracting me ?".

Marc Denny then showed us some moves from Silat and stick fighting. I just hope I still move that quick when I'm 49 !

Lastly was Mike Ajax. This was a rare insight into the mindset that you needed to adopt in combat and some drills that left you in no doubt about the violence and suddenness that was needed to win a knife fight.

In between all these events was loads of knives to see and play with, including new ones from Strider. I also got to play with Nyeti's Emerson Collection ! :D He has some amazing blades there !

Shaun from Emerson Knives also gave an impromptu show of just how to sharpen a blade on a Commander. At last I could actually SEE how to do it.

The weekend was worth every second and I'm looking forward to the next one Nyeti arranges for us. I know he has said that he wishes he had changed somes things, but he can be proud of what he achieved this time.

It was a pleasure to meet and train with Nyeti, Tamishigiri, Derek Russel, and our Usual Suspects Richard and Ryan amongst others. I hope to see you all again next time.

I'm just getting my membership updated so I can add some pics I took at the event, so as soon as that's done, I'll let those of you that weren't there see what you were missing.

I was planning on going to the seminar as a spectator and to see what goodies there were but my wife had other plans. Don't you just hate having to visit the in-laws!

It sounds like the seminar was informative and enjoyable to all that attended. I hope the next time there is a seminar that my wife will "let me off my leash" enough to attend. Ernie once told me something that I truly believe but do not always practice "Its easier to ask for forgiveness then it is to ask for permission."

Derek I couldn't help but notice that you are not from the U.S.. Did you travel all the way from England to the U.S. just for the seminar? Man that is just pure dedication to the art!

Yep, all the way just for the Seminar. Took a few days either side to have a look around Los Angeles as well. Good job I did. My flights were messed up going out, so I got there just in time, then had to come back earlier as my mother was taken ill.

Still, worth going all the way for. Great Seminar as I said ! I'll look forward to the next one ! :D

An excellent seminar! I'm making every effort to try and do some follow up training with Ernie Emerson, Steve Tarani, and Marc Denny. So much to learn and so little time (and money) to learn it!
