Here's one I just finished for a customer. I thought I'd post it here to get some feedback. It's a new design for me. The knife is 7 1/4" overall, blade length is 3 1/4", steel is CPM154, textured orange G10, 410 bolsters and liners. What do you guys think of the slot on the blade as opposed to a nail nick? It really makes it handy to open either right or left handed. No busted nails. Also, I thought I'd try something different on this knife. I put in the bearing system that Tom Ferry and I came up with. The blade is rock solid and as smooth as a baby's bottom. Let me know what you think.

knife has great lines and the lack of visible fasteners is very appealing to me, as are the internal workings you described.
To me, the slot disrupts the flow of the knife a little bit but I don't hate it by any means.
Does the knife lock open, or is this a slipjoint?

Abcdef, slots are a lot easier to clean out sometime than a nail nick. I was thinking of the use that it might encounter.
Lorien, this is a slipjoint. Though the slot does enterupt the lines a bit I opted for it's ease of use.
Cherwin, glad you like it.

Thanks guys

Michael

Michael, The knife is fantastic! You gave this knife a real modern/minimalist design and I like it! The nail slot mimicks the profile of the knife in the closed position and looks perfect. I would like to see another with the slot a touch further from the tip. If the action is smooth as you say, a person should have plenty of leverage with the slot closer to the pivot.

To me it looks like a well thought out, engineered and designed, modern German made Knife. Squared off corners rather than rounded really suit the orange scales.

I give it a 10!

Otto72,
Thanks for all that great feed back. You know, when you design a new knife you never really know how it's going to be accepted. I guess you just have to put it out there and hope for the best.

I'd like to know how you put that knife together. The bolsters, with that spacer between them and the liners, confound me:confused:
I have to say that the more I look at the knife, the easier it is to look past that slot. And being the practical guy that I am, I really do appreciate your comments about its utility. Makes sense to me:thumbup::cool:

Let's start a Mike Vagnino thread!
:)

Lorien, I'm glad you like the knife so much. The liners are glued onto the G-10 use G-flex. A product from West systems. After I milled a shelf were the bolsters were going to be placed I used Speed Bonder to affix them. Then it was just a matter of drilling all the appropriate holes. I just wanted something a little different. I like the way it turned out.

Thanks again

Michael

Overall I think it looks like a great little knife. I like the slot, although I'd probably prefer it back a little farther instead of its current location near the tip. Seems it would be a little easier to reach for one-handed opening. I'd also be a little concerned about the gap between the front of the bolster and the blade's ricasso when the knife is in the closed position. I'd worry about getting that sharp corner on the ricasso hung up in my pocket, or accidentally pinching myself there when opening the knife.

Great looking knife Mike and the slot idea is very cool. Would love hear more about the bearing system you guys came up with ;)

Bladeandbarrel, I put the slot in the blade for function. This is a slippy thats going to be used in backpacking and camping situations. I'm thinking dirt, grease and anything else that could make it hard to open with just a nail nick.

Wulf, I think I agree with putting the slot a little further up the blade. Just for the looks rather than for a one handed opener. I made the spring a little stiffer so I'm not sure it would work for a one handed opener.

Kevin, We're still working out a few details but as soon as we have it nailed down I'll let you know. Sorry I missed you at Blade. Looks like your staying busy. How's the slips and locks comming along?
