Anyone own one of these? I want to know about overall quality etc. Also, do any of you use these?

FWIW, I've owned a PPK and a PPW. Both were really nice for the money and cut well. :)

I use a CS Recon I tanto plain edge for cutting up old leather boots, cutting blackberry bushes, etc. (toothy edge behind tip), pumkin carving, shaving hair for a tattoo etc., opening up a tomato quick, and on and on.

It's a sword, which makes this question better suited for, well, the sword forum. ;)

"A tantō is a common Japanese single or, occasionally, double edged knife or dagger with a blade length between 15 and 30 cm (6"–12")" (wikipedia)

Its blade is only 11 inches long and Ive always considered a tanto a large knife....Would a dagger be considered a sword too? Sorry, but im not sure it matters all that much, and seems how you had nothing to say other than that there really was no reason for posting..

I allready own more modern americanized tantos and Im not sure I like them. I want a more traditional knife that doesnt cost all that much and doesnt have the tip like that americanized ones. I own a pk practical katana, and for the price I was very happy with the quality. I just wanted to see if people who own the tanto are happy with them.

Thanks for the clarification. I am actually well aware of what a tanto is. However, I am so accustomed to seeing "Practical Plus" paired with "Katana", that I mistakenly read your original post as such. It was a mistake on my part.

As for my post, there was a perfectly good reason for it. Another individual was confused about your question, and I attempted to clarify a bit for him. Regardless of how you classify the blade, the fact is that most (though not all) discussion in this forum centers around folding and fixed blade knives of a different nature than your tanto. Those who would be most familiar with it, and thus best able to help you with your question, would likely post more in the sword discussion forum - hence my suggestion. It was aimed at helping you, but obviously your focus was instead on rudeness and laziness. If you're looking for information on the Hanwei/Paul Chen blades there is plenty to be found with some internet searching.

haha, so have you posted anything in the sword forums? noone answers much of anything, and seeing as how I figure it fits the description of a knife I saw nothing wrong with posting where I thought id get a reply...and I know there are plenty of resources on the internet, though this is one of them and it is actually made for this type of thing so again I didnt think there was something wrong with posting here....I dont know where laziness comes into that and as for rudness, I wasnt intending to be. It was more that I thought your original post was out of place, and though you say it was to clarify it for willieboy, it did not end up very clarifying at all, and seemed more a mild insult than anything else. All in all, does it even matter?

No I haven't posted in the sword forums. And I never stated that there was anything "wrong" with you posting your question here. I merely made a helpful suggestion. By laziness, I was referring to the fact that there is plenty of existing information to be found regarding these blades, if one takes the initiative to search the Internet. Whether or not you intended your post to be rude, it certainly came across as such, and I do think my post provided sufficient clarification and was not "out of place". As for it mattering, it does indeed (at least to me) because I don't post rude or condescending comments directed at other members, and I don't appreciate when it is done to me.

Well Im sorry if it came across that way, though your post seemed that way to me. And what exactly did you carify? That a tanto is a sword? it was a misunderstanding from the start so thats what I meant by it not clarifying much....anyways laziness doesnt make any sense at all. Sure, I can find plenty of specs like length, what its made of, etc. but what im looking for is some hands on info from other people. Thats what I think part of the purpose of this forum is and I dont think I should be criticized for using it. again, Im sorry if I offended you, though that was not my intention and it was more in retaliation to what I took as a jab at myself.

Well it seems it was a misunderstanding on both our parts. No harm done. Again, I'm not criticising you for posting here, and I hope you are able to find the information you're seeking. When I was researching katanas, I was able to located a decent amount of information (including personal reviews) of numerous blades, including the PP series. I think what you'll determine is that the quality is okay, depending on planned usage, but not up to the standards of the mid/high-end blades.

Thank you, glad we got that all figured out :D . And I did find tameshegiri cutting tests and such for various katanas, but there wasnt much other than very basic info on the tanto. Again, I apologise if I offended you and Im glad it ended reasonably well. haha, I dont much like that kind of thing and especially not in these forums. Part of it is that ill be randomly criticised by some people for posting something somewhere, which is what I took your post as.

If you are talking about the Paul Chen Prac + Tanto. I have all three of the Practical Plus Swords. The Katana the Waki as well as the tanto. For the money they are great fun.Differentially Forged blades with fair hamons and real Rayskin. All 3 of mine cut very well and are very tight. I have used the tanto on camp several outings now and it always gets attention from fellow woodsfolk. I wish they had regular silk cord wraps rather than the leather. That is my only negative. The tanto I sharpen just like one of my Bigger Bowie style knives and I have had pretty good results. I know it is not traditional but it is a practical way to sharpen it. Pardon the Pun... ~baba~

I posted about an "american tanto". I find little use for a "japanese tanto" outside a weapon.

I have one. It is actually pretty nice for the price.

It certainly didn't come shaving-sharp, however, it still does cut, just not by accident. Meaning, that if you're precise with your push cuts or your slices, it will do fine; much like an actual sword. Stabbing would be a different story. It wouldn't take much to poke through skin. It has a very dangerous point.

Overall, I really like it. It has a nice balance, despite the thin blade design (compared to a bowie, or some such).

Good luck to you!

PS...I know what you mean, when it comes to people jumping on you for an innocent post. Sad to say, I see that on these forums quite often.
