Practice Blades...Worth It?

I don't trust myself with a knife. Not just yet, at least. I want to adopt the BM 710 as my EDC knife but don't want to put an end to my musical career by chopping my fingers off. Are practice blades worth it? The 710 has a trainer knife equivalent.

What do you mean when you say, "I don't trust myself with a knife"?

Trainers such as those that you've mentioned are generally intended for martial arts and combative training. They substantially reduce (though do not elliminate) the dangers of injury in such training.

If you're worried about simply opening and closing and non-combative handling of an unfamiliar knife and lock mechanism, you could cover the edge with black electrical tape or duct tape for a few hours while you accustom yourself to it.

Good question...

I have several videos on knife-fighting/knife-manipulation and ALL of them suggest that you use a training knife...Janich recommends that you either buy a training knife, file down the edge of your knife, or put duct tape over the edge.

What exactly do you want to do with the training knife?? Do you just want to practice withdrawing and opening/closing or do you want to practice a knife-fighting art (like Kali)?? I think you could get away with a live blade for solo work but you DEFINITELY need a trainer if you want to do Filipino martial arts...

Edited to add: Sorry Gollnick, your post was not showing while I was busy typing away...I guess great minds think alike :)

As mentioned above they're definitely worth it if you're going to be training with someone or doing any FMA.

As soon as I have some money I'll be getting at least 2 training blade clones of the ones I already have. This way my friend and I can train without drawing blood!!! :)

If you want to practice with your knives, then you want a trainer. Especially balisongs I believe.
But then if you don't really trust yourself with a knife then.... you gotta ask yourself why.

I don't mean 'I don't trust myself with a knife' as when people say 'I don't trust myself with a gun', meaning they think they'll go postal all of the sudden, rather I'm afraid my lack of formal training, I will end up hurting myself when I discover I should have known something rather simple.

I wouldn't be surprised if much of knife handling was common sense, but the majority of people have atrocious gun handling because of their lack of training, and do things that are glaringly obviously wrong (sweeping people with their muzzles, not keeping their fingers off the trigger, etc.), I don't want to be the same way with a knife!

If your fingers are that important to you, start garrying a small fixed blade for EDC instead of a folder. With any folder, there is still a chance that the lock will break while you are using the knife, especially in a self defense situation.
