Hello all. I'm trying out a couple of sharpening systems and I'd like to know if anyone can recommend a cheap pocket folder to practice on. Preferably a knife made from carbon steel instead of stainless. I've not had the opportunity to learn sharpening and I've got access to a couple of different systems (i.e. sharpmaker, stones, etc.) And if I use a cheap knife and I ruin it (likely :)) then I won't feel too bad about it. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Maybe a thrift store or flea market. Lot's of old carbon slip joint folders can be found at flea markets and you could restore them as you practice.

I was thinking the same thing. A cheap production knife might have significantly different steel properties and might not work as well for sharpening practice. A knife that is not worth much because of its condition could still be useful for sharpening practice.
