I hava a pretty worn out cheapo Bali I bought long ago... If I want to learn Bali manipulation, are there any negative side effects if I start with a model like that...? the blade play is really severe...
the advantage: the blade is so dull, there is absoluteley no chance to get cut :D

Nah... playing with cheapies is alright but you will have to be carefull that you don't let yourself get too sloppy with the technique. When you do actually get a quality bali you will probably appreciate it more, and your progression will accelerate. But the tighness of the knife may throw you off for a while if you are used to alot of blade play.

Hey there Seb! If you really want to learn to use a balisong, you're going to want to replace that cheapie. It's not that you can't flip one, it's that you can only flip one for so long. Sadly, your knife is going to break if you use it every day. But, you probably didn't pay a whole lot for it, so no big loss.

Here's what I recommend to everyone starting out, who isn't comfortable spending tons of money. Buy a Jaguar (if you can in Germany). They're just a little more than twice the price of a china cheapie, but are more than twice as good. Now, the Jaguar will do you just fine, until one day... *POP*! A hinge pin breaks and your knife just won't work. Do not be alarmed :), it is easily repaired by following the directions here, courtesy of Balisongxtreme. That Jaguar will last you years if you maintain it properly. In fact, the sooner you replace the pins, the better, because the fix is stronger than the original.

And once you become hopelessly addicted to balisongs, then you'll have no problem spending a week's earnings on one :D.

Well, as you're in Germany, try the Herbertz balisongs, they're the same as the Jaguars as far as I can tell, but the pins might be better.

Ok, then I'll try one of these Herbertz balis... most of the knives they make are, well... not highest quality... but for the price it's ok, I think...
The reason I dug it out again was the thread about the spyderco bali... when they come out with an affordable quality Balisong, I don't want wait half a year until I can start to show off with it :D :D :D
