Practices of Filipino Warriors

Remember Saving Private Ryan? Who could forget the first 30-45 minutes? You might not know that before that huge and costly operation, US soldiers were each given a couple of ampules of morphine to use when they hit the beach. The military powers that were at the time knew what kind of losses/injuries would be sustained. So did our men but they undertook the assignment anyway. We owe them so much for their sacrifices...

Donna,

That sounds like the 1989 issue of Combat Knives, which was the magazine that got me interested in well made knives. I remember the pictures of the Moro warriors with their krises in the waistbands. Every last one of them looked like they were about to do battle. They had very stern faces. The article also had pictures of Barongs, if I remember right. Now I have to search for the magazine. The pages of mine are yellow now.

Re the Saving Private Ryan thing...

That's the kind of cold pragmatism that
makes my guts curl up into a little ball.
Kind of like how what they give in nerve
gas shots is supposedly just a palliative
and contains "buffers" and stimulants,
buffers to soak some of the nerve agent
effects and stimulants to make you able to
fight a little longer.

Looking at tactical decisions like this,
it's easy to think that war planners are
a sick bunch, but when you look at the
strategic level there's usually a good
reason for why things are done the way
they are.

Kind of like how our military prefers weapons
that maim to weapons that kill outright.

Gee, I walked into this discussion expecting to hear how someone's anting-anting (excuse the spelling) didn't work on the last all-saints' day.
