Practicing with BM 42 a cardinal sin?

So I got curious about balisongs, and ordered a BM 42, and it's a beautiful, beautiful knife and I can't stop flipping it around. How addicted am I? I took it into the bathroom with me today so that I could get my fix without distressing my co-workers. I've been reading balisongxtreme.com and practicing rockers and rolls with every item on my desk all day long. That's how addicted I am...

...then I read here that you shouldn't practice with a 42, and should use a practice balisong instead. I immediately felt guilty about playing with my new knife. I began to have horrible visions of it falling into pieces at my feet from being played with too much.

My question is: should I stop using my 42, put it into a drawer, and quietly go into withdrawal, or am I being overly paranoid about it now? The thing is, I hate having knives I can't use. I'm not practicing aerials or anything that would cause me to drop the knife on a regular basis, just normal openings, closings, etc., etc.. Does anyone else ONLY have a 42, and has it shown damage from being a favorite plaything? Or is it more of a "you should use a Stradivarius only when you're already a maestro" kind of issue?

Okay, I guess technically that's more than one question.

Who ever said you shouldn't play with it? That thing shouldn't fall apart unless you play with it daily for like 1000 yrs. Heck, you would only want to keep it prestine if you could only get one and if it were a collectors item. (not yet at least) Its not like you can't just get another anyways...

Some people don't flip their knives because they are collector's items or have historic or cash value and flipping them would ruin that. I don't think that a 42 falls into these categories. However, I recommend using a *dull* knife when trying out new aerials for the first time.

Personally I dislike having a knife I can't flip. I have a BM68-S that was NIB when I bought it but now has latch scratches and plenty of blade dings.

C'est la vie.

Can't wait to get my latchless... maybe I'll whack off a 42 soon.

Dude......... how can you even consider NOT playing with such a fine balisong???

I have about 200+ hours on both of mine and they're holding up just great.

Enjoy it! You can always get another one......... plus, you're hooked.

getting 'em open
is half the fun!

I beat the heck out of my BM42. I've dropped it several times and I don't feel guilty at all. I have a pre-production and two first-productions that I don't play with, but if you need to have a excellent user or it's just not as fun. Jag's just don't cut it.

If you're fortunate to have one of the numbered prototypes, pre- or first-production pieces, you might want to set it aside.

But, for any other BM42, use it, abuse it. That's what they're for. I play with mine all the time and even carry and use 'em.

They are very well-built and very durable. I also have several BM45s and a couple of 44s that get abused regularly and all are holding up just fine.

If you ever see first pro number 125/500 please beat the living * * * * out of the person.

Thanks everyone! That was exactly what I was hoping you'd say. My guilty conscience is eased, so I'm going to go home tonight and play to my heart's content. Can't wait until the 42A gets here...

Almost forgot -- I'll keep a look out for that stolen bali, since I'm in your neck of the woods. Not that I'm likely to see it on the street or anything, but you never know...

A WORD OR WARNING:
I speak from personal experience, the 42 is great, but not invincible, don't use it (or take extra caution when using it) over hard surfaces, especially cement!

And NaTeDoGG if I see 125/500 I will kick some ass for you!

Thanks guys. Was someone I knew a long time ago, they hadn't been by in nearly a year. I was asleep at the time when he came over, someone let him into where I had all my stuff laid out while they went to wake me up. I went over everything before he left... my ring, chains, and seemed all my knives were all there... but ever since then I haven't found my 42.

I'll see him again someday.

I did, I used it just as much as my regular 42. I guess its good to still have one... but I can't do two at once. :S
