We've been hit by a major earthquake in the second largest city - Christchurch, today at lunch time. Nearly 100 dead so far. Hundreds trapped. USA, Israel, Japan and Australia sending teams to help. G-d bless them and save many I pray.

I have extended family in Christchurch. Fortunately all are fine.

Many people killed and still trapped........:(
My thoughts and prayers are with them.

Positive thoughts and prayers from the Pleasant Valley for the people of Chrstchurch.

Prayers sent from one quaker to another.

Been there, done that.

This one's a real bastard.

Prayers for the families of the dead, for those still trapped and for all the heroic rescuers putting their lives directly on the line to save others. Their bravery cannot be overstated.

The prayers and thoughts are appreciated. There are plenty of people who badly need them.

I was on the 7th floor of a building when it hit. Words fail me when I try to describe it (at least words I can use in polite company). All our office made it out fine but our PA's mother is still missing. I feel for her, she is very close to her Mom.

If you want to help, send money. Seriously. Money donations are far more valuable than donations of food and clothing (especially from someone overseas). The Red Cross is my preferred charity though others are also set up to help.

If you are interested in the science of the quake (I find that learning the science behind quakes helps me deal with the fear) then check out http://www.geonet.org.nz/.

Thank you all

I spent a fair bit of time in New Zealand. It will always be a second home to me. My thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Christchurch and to all of Aotearoa:(

Hi Craig.......
Words cannot describe how shocking this has been. There are terrible stories coming out of Christchurch.

NZ is such a small close knit country. It will have a devastating effect on the national psyche.
My brother and his family live in Wellington which in theory has a higher earthquake risk than Christchurch. I never gave it much thought in the past but now I am really worried about it.
I always stay in a high rise hotel when I visit Wellington and I have often felt small tremors which shake the entire hotel violently. To be on the 7th floor during a major quake must have been truly frightening. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I was on a working vacation in Wellington just a few months ago. I really had a great time, nice place. BUt yeah, it really is just a matter of time until the big one hits that place too. And when it does it will be truly devastating, probably a lot more than what we're seeing in Christchurch, as horrible as it is.

Whenever I visited Wellington it was always in the back of my mind.

I had no idea about Christchurch though, before the one that hit in September.
