Praying that Salem is safe from the wild fires

I'm obviously a bit slow on the uptake these days, but I heard on the news this morning that the WA wildfires in Okanagan county are burning just east of Tonasket, where Salem lives. I'm hoping and praying Salem and his family and shop are safe and secure.

I didn't hear of any close to Tonasket last night. Although we had some rain and perhaps lightning last night in that general vicinity. The big fires are well west of Tonasket. We have one that is close to contained that is about 30 mi SW of Spokane. I'll keep my fingers crossed in case something started yesterday.

Hey Greg, thanks buddy. Yesterday the neighbor ran up and told us to look up behind the property- sure enough, a big black column of smoke less than a mile away. We thought we might have to evacuate, and my wife was packing while I ran up the back road toward the fire in a Jeep with the neighbor.
We found the fire, no one was there yet except two other local guys with shovels. About half an hour of running around cutting and shoveling on the edge of the fire to try to stop it, was enough to convince us to get out of there and that it was futile. By that time retardant and a lot of water was being dropped above us; when we got back into the open DNR and fire engines from all over were arriving.
We stayed and talked for a minute, during which time we saw that a couple of structures were going up, back where we had been. We went home to bring the news that the fire was being blown away from our homes, uphill and to the NE.
All afternoon we were clearing around the house, and wetting things down, I was dragging propane bottles well away from the house, etc. 12 air tankers and 5 choppers were continuously flying the fire- it was like Sea Tac in the sky here until dark.
There were evacuations in the direction it went, as the fire grew from about 2-300 acres when we arrived to around 1500 acres by the evening. They hit it so hard that, coupled with the fact that we are now getting rain, the fire is now contained and mostly out as far as I can find out.

It was exciting to say the least... I was damn worried about my shop, no insurance and my entire livelihood in there. Rest assured that our fire preparedness level will be very thorough the rest of this season.

Thank you for your concern! I just hope that my friends that were in the path of the Carlton Complex fire yesterday evening came through it all right- I haven't heard what happened yet.

Wow! That's some story Salem and way too close for comfort, scary in fact. Glad you are allright.

Wow! I've always thought the northwest states were pretty rainy, never heard much about forest fires there before. Now I hear the fires are vast. Glad you got away with nothing more than a scare, Salem. maybe you should start to think about getting a metal roof. They are supposed to be good fire prevention.

Most people don't understand that WA state has a dividing line called the Cascade Mountain Range. To the west of the Cascades we get a lot of drizzly rains that still don't amount to a great deal of rainfall compared to some states that get a lot more rain by volume. To the east of the Cascades rain is a relatively rare commodity and the land there has a tendency to look barren and dry, with the exception of lands irrigated by river water or well water.

I think it also bears mentioning that any heavily wooded area is prone to having deadfall and other tinder laying on the ground, just waiting for the first lightning strike to set it off. Where there are forests, there will be forest fires. It's part of the cycle of nature.

Eternal vigilance is the price to live here! Luckily I do have a metal roof on the house and the two shop buildings, just a few trees near the house, and after these last few days, no fuels on the ground or near the trees near any buildings...

It's been a wake-up call for everyone around here, there is a lot of fire season left.

Thanks for the concern, guys. No frickin' fire is getting my house and shop without a serious fight!

Salem, I, like the others had wondered about how the fires effected you. Happy you were spared. Sorry I wasn't able to visit when we were in your area. I will try again another time. Jess

We obvious learned from history that the Salem burnings are something to avoid. Witch is a good thing. You see what I did there?

Glad you got past that unscathed, bud.
Rick
